(right-click my computer -->properties->device manager tab --> look for yellow exclamation points)

if remove the External Burner from the device manager, disconnect it from your computer, and reboot do you get sound again?

: I have a HP Pavillon 6630 and Windows 98. I have just installed a Hi-Val External USB 2.0 CD-Rewritable drive, and now i don't have any sound in my computer. I have tried the troubleshooting guide in my system, but nothing works. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated ASAP. Thanks!
