My ibm T23 will turn on but won't boot. The fan starts to run full force for a split second then slows down. It sounds like your car when you are revving the engine from idle to full speed.

Did this suggestion, or anything else, work for you? I have the same problem and haven't been able to fix it yet. by chance or not, it happened when the CMOS battery gave up. btw, the suggestion to power up with the cmos and regular batteries removed is IBM's method for bypassing the power on password, as described on page 27 in the T23 hardware maintenance manual, 62P9631.pdf.

try taking battery out of laptop, then plug in ac adaptor while holding power on button down. The logic on these can occassionally get hung. Hopefully, it will start for you. last time I had one of these do this, I ended up changing the system board, so its worth trying a few times.
