My friend has a Dell Dimension 4100 with Windows 98. It was responding very slowly, with no new applications being added and minimal usage. Performance (which SBC DSL Tech reconnized) was at 40%. He made changes and then 82%, which didn't last long after hanging up.I thought increasing RAM from 128 MB to 512 MB and upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP. No such luck. After loading... and the desktop would come up... within a couple of minutes it would FREEZE. I would have to turn the system off... since CTRL/ALT/DEL would not respond. Then reboot... and same thing all over again.
Also there was no updated virus scan loaded. Before the RAM and XP updates I did attempt to download a Trial NORTON, however, it would never complete the SCAN cycle.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the problem and/or solution?
