First, my system:
Dell Latitude laptop
Win XP Pro (SP1)

I'm trying to install Palm VersaMail v2.6 which comes with my Palm Tungsten E.

After my first attempt, I got an "error applying transforms" message and cleared that .mst file from the registry using some useful information I found on this board:

Now when I try to install VersaMail I get
"Error -1610: The configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact your support personnel."

I have spent an hour with Palm Support and they just tell me it's a Windows problem and to call Microsoft (yeah, thanks).

Any idea how I can successfully install VersaMail 2.6 and how to get around this "Error -1610"?

I have had a similar problem with a program for a mobile phone. I haven't got the answer myself yet but if you follow this link to InstallShield: http://support.installshield.com/ and type 1610 in the search window, you may find the information you are looking for. The InstallShield site refers to the MS support site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 where you can download the "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility". That's as far as I have got myself - I haven't used the utility yet. Hope you have success in overcoming the problem!
