As well as closing down all the background tasks with ctl alt del (except systray and explorer) you also need to disble your screen saver. Right click on the desktop, go to active desktop and cusomise my desktop, select the screen saver tab and in the drop down box select none and then apply it. After defrag has finished go back to the screen saver tab and reselect your old screen saver and again click apply.
