Let me try this again you can't read the error. I got this error kernel 32 caused a general protection fault in module user.exe at 0003:000035f6. When I try to boot up the system it crashes on the windows log screen. Can you tell me how to fix this error?

To Matt:
I did exactly what you suggested and was able to boot, but not completely. I ran system checker, fixed corrupt files. I now get Internet explorer caused an invalid page fault in module shdoc401.dll. I ran internet repair tool, it couldn't fix it, says version 5.0 of shdocvw.dll exists but needs to be greater than 6.0 and to reinstall. I ran the reinstall of IE6, but it gets stuck at the part where it needs to download some components from Microsoft website, it won't connect. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help so far.

Thanks for the help. I was experiencing the same problem. I simply renamed the file back to DLL and it worked. I was close to throwing it off my third floor balcony...Once again thanks...

I just fixed another computer with this same problem. Here's the steps I took to fix it:
1) Restored shdocvw.dll using a boot disk and Win98 CD. Actual command: extract /l c:\windows\system /a e:\win98\base4.cab shdocvw.dll
2) Ran System File Checker. Since I was having problems browsing the windows folder in My Computer and I couldn't click the Start button I deicided to run c:\command.com by browsing to in in My Computer. From here I typed c:\windows\system\sfc.exe and System File Checker opened.
3) Restored all files from Win98 CD successfully.

Okay, I had this same problem on a Windows 98 computer. After researching I found that the file shdocvw.dll was renamed to shdocvw.bak and was causing kernel32.dll to crash. I'm still trying to figure out what renamed the file. Using a win98 boot floppy I extracted the original shdocvw.dll from a win98 CD and copied it to c:\windows\system. This fixed the biggest problem of not being able to log into Windows. On top of this the computer had a virus called download.trojan (Symantec's name for it) and a spyware program running called keenvalue.exe. After removing these, upgrading to IE6, and performing Windows Update the computer started to run nicely again. As for all win98 machines, perform a defrag just for the hell of it.
