COMP FREEZES/"RESETS" ITSELF AT RANDOM T Post a Reply
From: Dan on 07/23/2003
Hey, I have had my SONY VAIO computer for about a year now, with no problems except in the last week or 2. The problem is, the computer is just FREEZING TOTALLY at random times, the mouse will lock up, no keyboard input, sometimes the lights and keyboard and mouse will go off, like it lost power or something. I get no blue screens or nothing, it just HANGS... The power button on the case does not work either when it freezes, and the only way I can regain control is switching off the power on the surge protector and rebooting. This will happen at RANDOM times, either in a game or just browsing a web forum (like this one). It not only freezes, but sometimes it will "reboot" itself auto too.. I say "Reboot" because it doesn't acually reboot, it will just make a lot of noise (like its thinking on the HD or something) and the screen will go black, almost like its rebooting but nothing happens.. i have to cut the power also to regain control of that. I thought it might be a registry issue, since I used so many tweek XP programs in the past, so i reformatted my whole comp! brand new! .. i go into windows.. and it freezes! Im thinking it is some kind of hardware issure maybe, not sure. I am running Windows XP sp1, with 1.6 GHZ p4, 512 MB DDR, 80 GB hard drive, gf2 mx 400 video card, thats it. everything is stock sony vaio, except the video card. Thx for any help you can provide, this is really annoying. :\

first off, clean out your system -- get rid of all the dust that's built up since you got it. be CAREFUL though -- use a can of compressed air ($8CAD at radio shack, generally) and hold a vacuum well away to suck up what comes blowing out. make sure to get all the fins on the CPU cooler cleaned, as well. don't hold the can so close that liquid condenses on the computer parts -- you only want to puff the crud away, not blast the delicate parts with subzero temperatures.

vacuum out the power supply (as much as you can without opening it).

when you're done, leave the case off, plug the system in, and boot up -- are all the fans spinning properly, especially the one on the CPU cooler?

if so, check the system temp and see if it happens again.

WARNING: sometimes you'll do this and when you power up -- nothing. nada. zip. lights are on but nobody's home (literally: all lights on the front are on, but there's no POST beep test, the hard drive doesn't spin up, nothing.

RELAX -- and go get another power supply. aim for one that's beefier than your current one. your current power supply is probably a 300W, so go for a 350.

if you're not comfortable with either cleaning your system or replacing the power supply, pay the $20 - $30 to have a tech do it.

after you're done, you should be fine.

btw: you DO have your computer on a UPS, right? an uninterruptible power supply? if not, slap yourself upside the head, go get one NOW (a half-decent one is about $150CAD) and hope to hell the current fluctuations haven't fried your processor.

Just when was the GF2 graphics card installed? Suggest you remove using device manager, then reboot and let windows reinstall it, this could well be a graphics driver problem.Try it.

anyone there? :/
anyways, i got more info.. how hot is a CPU/MP supose to be running at? While it kept resetting over and over, I reset into bios and checked the temp of the CPU and motherboard, the CPU was at 105 degrees F and the MP was at about 97 degrees F. Does that mean anything?

Also, when it freezes theres usually a high pitched.. *noise* that comes out of the speakers for half a second, not sure what that is either.
