The system registry might be corrupt, so do this,boot pc into dos mode by pressing f8 repeatedly until you get to the system startup menu. Choose command prompt, and then go to this directory...
c:\windows\command\
when you are in this directory run 'Scanreg/fix' and scanreg will run.
Wait until scanreg has finished and then run 'scandisk' then reboot the pc...
Go to windows explorer and see if you can see the directory tree.
