WINDOWS ME; PII; 112 RAM; CANNOT BOOT EVEN IN SAFE MODE :(

I get the normal startup screen, and then I get windows me welcome screen, then my choice of startups (i.e. normal, bootlog; safe, command prompt only). Does not matter what I choose, or what I load or do not, the next screen is the blue screen with the above error - then "press any key", then
"Windows Protection Error"
You need to restart your computer.
System halted."

Over and over....
All help is appreciated!

ok - now I have my hard drive in a friends computer so I can diagnose it - and hopefully fix the thing. The only indicator that I can find is "faultlog.txt".
I had 4 things happen at once:
"webshotstray caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at cef1:8445a490
Registers:
Do you need all these letters/numbers (ex: EAX=0066fa84 CS=16f EIP=8445a490 EFLGS=00010246 - this is only the first line!)) to fix this? If so, I'll report them.
Then I get stack dump and strings of numbers with a few letters thrown in.
then, it is on to the next one:
KAZAA caused an invalid page fault...
then again at the same time
KAZAA caused... (I see mention of ceb0:8445a390 - part of my error code?)
then
EXPLORER caused...
then
EXPLORER caused... (same time again).
I can see all the files on this drive and have the ability to add delete, modify, etc. If only someone could give me some guidance, it sure would make my day!

Thanks in advance!

I cannot boot from either floppy OR CDROM...I have checked my CMOS to make sure it checks both of those for an OS prior to the hard drive - and that is all OK, but it still will not boot from either device. The only thing that has changed is one time I got an error that said :
" While initializing device CONFIGMG
Windows Protection Error
You need to restart your computer"

Oh and also you will need to pay attention to the 'device manager' in windows control panel under 'system' Sorry i forgot to say this...

It maybe a driver problem like i stated at the beginning of my message...Remove any networking and other drivers from windows and reboot, this will reload the drivers, if one is corrupt the refresh will normally sort out the problem

Windows protection error can be caused by drivers...If you cannot boot into safe modee then you have a problem with a windows core file or a system core file if you like.

Have you tried step by step confermation? Don't load any thing say no to the lot and see if you get any joy with your system booting to the desktop.

If you can then go to system information and run the system config utility. You will have 2 main files...System.ini and win.ini...

Uncheck all these in the main box and then click on apply...
Go to run and click on msconfig. In the "startup" tab un-check all that is checked. Then click apply and restart the system...

Does this work for you...if so then check one box at a time in msconfig only...and reboot each time if you get a blue screen with the exception then you know that by checking that one box it caused the exception to interupt the boot sequence. Locate the program and remove it from add and remove programs. Reboot the pc and check all that was in msconfig and the system config utility.

You may find that the problem is within the system config utility and not in msconfig startup... Its a point of trial and error at the moment

If this does not work then you will have to try to re-install windows with the hope of over-writing the corrupt file... Use only the origional disk you had that was used to install windows 98SE.

Can you boot from your windows CD? If it does, this will give you a place to start from and run scans and check for viruses.
