gateway running Windows ME randomly crashes to bla Post a Reply

I have a two year old (still under warranty) Gateway performance p4-1400. It has Windows ME. About a year ago I upgraded my video card to a Radeon 7500. It worked great. I have upgraded my memory from 128mb to 384 mb. I also have sound blaster live value card. Recently my computer screen will randomly just go black. It never happens on any particular program. My monitor and computer light will glow amber but the computer will not respond. I end up having to reset, if that will work, and if it doesn't, I have to turn the power strip off and back on. Also, sometimes Windows will not shut down. I have talked to Gateway and they are no help. I have run every diagnostic program there is and I have Norton anti-virus and it shows no problems. I have updated device drivers. I have done a clean install of Windows Me two or three times because System Restore will not restore. If someone can help, it would be great!!

My computer is a 7 year old gateway that runs XP and just recently I bought a 128mb ATI Radeon 7500 and sometimes i try to turn it on but the power light stays amber. I think the power requirements for the card is to high and it saps to much power out of the system enough to prohibit it from starting up. if you could give me some pointers on how to beef up the power that would be great.

This is not fair to Gateway. There is no reason for a supervisor first of all. You always have the option for In Warranty Service. Second of all this may not be a Gateway Issue, you have a ATI RADEON 7500, have you though about talking to them? it is their video card, gateway does not have issues or troubleshooting information on your video card. Shut off all power management to troubleshoot by F1 - ing into BIOS from Gateway startup screen also try F9 ing in BIOS to load setup defaults. Make sure your CPU fan and Power supply fans are spinning. Plug the tower directly into an electrical outlet. See if it happens in safe mode. If it happens in safe mode boot off SRK1 to DOS Promopt and see if it happens if you leave it there. Run scandisk or something from dos prompt to pass time. Go to start > run > msconfig and put in selective startup and uncheck load startup group items. Go to control panel > system > performance > file system > advanced troubleshooting button > check disable system restore. Make sure Gateway Goback is not on your Win ME system, if it is you need to delete/recreate your partition in fdisk and format and reload. Any questions, ask.

We had the same problems with ME constantly. If you are under warranty, your best bet is to contact either Gateway directly or the store you purchased your computer. In contacting Gateway, request to speak directly to a supervisor. Tell them you are under warranty and you wish your computer fixed immediately. You can contact the Better Business Bureau if they will not comply. In the mean time, go to System Tools (under Programs, Accessories). Do a disk cleanup. Make sure all the boxes are checked when a gray disk cleanup box appears. It will ask you if you are sure, click on yes. Then again under System Tools, click on disk defragmenter. System Restore will not work since you upgraded your memory, and possibly also because you added extra equipment.
