Does anyone have any suggestions, I'm running Windows ME? It will load to the windows logon, allow you to enter the password and logon, and then comes up with the error "Explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL. Explorer will now close. If you continue experiencing problems, try restarting your computer." Restarting only comes up with the same error, ctrl + alt + delete, doesn't help either but allows the restart, otherwise you have to manually shut down the computer. When you close out of the error, (there is no options for details) all you get is the desktop. No icons, no start button, no system tray, no tool bar. Please help if you have any idea how to correct this? Thank you in advance.

I have had the same problem as you both. AOl won't help you except for dumb theoretical answers. The Microsoft "knowledge" base is completely inept and totally lacking. My Gateway Tech always says the same thing: "Microsoft products self destruct.... its not our fault". I was able to finally fix mine by re-installing Windows ME as well as all drivers. I chose the option that lays the new installation over the old one... I didn't have to wipe out my files and stuff (although in the past, on similar problems, I have had to do that). In my case, Gateway included 3 restore CDs. I stuck in Disk 2, and that began the process of getting this thing fixed. However... NOTHING gets permanently rid of "kernel 32.dll" or "paige 32.dll" or "Jscript.dll" errors. Microsoft doesn't care one bit about this problem, they have no advice for it on their website, and they basically deny the problem exists. I wish MSN nothing but death and destruction.

I am assuming you now have Windows XP home edition. My first goal would be to transfer those old files to a backup CD or floppies. Do this immediately. Then I would probably find someone technology savy that can help you completely wipe the hard drive and start over. The problem with all your devices is that you do not have the proper drivers installed. You will need to find these drivers over the Internet or install CD's that came with the computer. I always recommend deleting the partition of your hard drive and reformating before an operating system install. Upgrades generally cause problems and more headaches than a complete reinstall. If you have Windows XP, simply insert the install CD, restart the computer, make sure to hit a button when it asks if you want to boot to the CD, enter setup. It will run awhile installing drivers to run setup. Once you get to the install, it will give you the option to delete the partition on your hard drive. Delete ALL partitions and create a new one. AGain, it will give an option to do so after deleting the partition. You cannot install Windows without a partition. Then it will ask you how you want to format the hard drive. I always recommend NTFS with Windows XP. It has compressing capabilities, better security, and runs more stable on larger hard drives (as well as some other good things). You will then be able to run the setup automatically. AFter you do the install, you will need to get drivers for all your devices. Again, this is where a nice computer nerd will come in handy. Incidentially, your previous problem was associated with incorrect multiple user settings. This usually can be fixed in safe mode and removing all multiple user settings. Remember, in Windows ME there are two locations you need to setup for multiple user desktops. If you want more information, post back. Hope this helps. Computerpilot

This is exactly the same identical problem that I am having! I'm running Windows ME as well and I keep coming up with the same error message. All that comes up is the wallpaper that I saved for the desktop. No icons, no start menu, no taskbar, no nothing. My husband tried installing a different Windows just to turn it on and the funny thing is, most of my files are still there on the hard drive. You have to right click on start and then left click on explore in order to find them. I found them by accident. Some one Please help! I can't do anything on my computer. My modem won't respond to the new Window and several other things such as the volume, the CD player and the media player. It says that they are already in use. I'm assuming they are in use by Windows ME, because its not completely gone! Is this a virus? Thank you for your help if you can help me.
