Rechner neu Starten, voila, Problem gelöst Roger Pfaff (In English: delete abnormal long file name extensions (more than 20 Characters) in Registry under Hkey Classes Root, these begin with a DOT e.g. .avi .zip)

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win98/Q_20395440.htmlI dont know if your problem is exactly the same, but if so, read my solution and good luck. If you read the entire thread you will see that I noticed a trend, did you happen to install ie6 recently, or did this happen after going to windows update? if you manage to uninstall ie6, dont panic if it takes a while to reboot, it took minutes for windows to reboot (not a long time when you think about it, but minutes seem like a long time when you are staring at a blank monitor.)
