The dreaded blue screen occurs AFTER I reformatted Post a Reply
From: Dominic on 02/08/2003
I am running windows 98 and I kept getting the blue screen saying there is an error in VxD. So I figured I had to reformat my computer to fix this. But that still didnt work. As windows is reinstalling it still comes up! Can anyone help me or give me any suggestions??

May I ask how much power your power supplies can provide. For my past experience if a system locks up randomly and thereby srews the registry up, there is usually either the memory timing screwy or the power supply can't handle the power demand, after there had been some hardware additions. Either way get a stronger PS or better quality Memory.
As to re-installing Windows over an existing installation, good luck!
This will fix in general nothing since the setup program will search for existing system data files stored on the hard drive. If it finds one that seems to be intact, it will use it!!!!!! Even if it points to something that doesn't work. Many times a recently installed application that needed its own function in a "system.dll" will screw up the operating system by putting their modified one onto the disk. Not all do, but there is this one we will find sooner or later. In that case the Windows setup program will find a newer version and leaves it untouched. If you dont have the time, drive or knowledge to find the offender it is usually best to back up your personal data (if you can) fdisk and re-format the system. On another note some operating systems leave junks on the drive that does not get touched by the high level format either and later finds it and screws up again. In that case get a HDD management program like Maxblast, depending on your drives manufacturer and have them partition your hard drive.
Good Luck

What exactly do you mean by "chip crunch?" I am having a similar problem where my win2k started getting buggy so I started a reinstall. No big deal, it needs it once a year or so. Only this time, I get all sorts of errors before and during the win2k install... "KMODE_EXCEPTION" errors, "IRQ_something or other" errors, etc etc. I can't even get the installation to finish copying the files! I have already taken my ATA100 PCI controller out of the loop and connected my hard drive to motherboard again, but with little improvement.

I have installed win2k about 20 times and never seen anything like it... if it is a problem where something on the motherboard needs to be reset the "old fashioned way," (i.e. "chip crunch") how do I go about doing that?

Thanks in advance.

Chances are either your motherboard or your Ram is stuffed. I had that problem, and found that it was the IDE controllers on the board. Do a bit of an old fashioned "chip crunch" and see if that helps. Don't forget to earth yourself!
