From: Ed on 01/31/2003
I just installed 2 additional 128 RAM chips and the computer recognizes that I now have 324 mgb of RAM..Good… my scanner-printer-zip-floppy all work fine... EXCEPT my CD ROM isn't recognized and wont read and my HP CD/DVD drive doesnt work either and the tray wont open on the HP & isn't ID'ed. Obviously I cant install from the CD drives. Any suggestions?

I was trying to install linux on my computer. During the installation the computer froze. I turned it off by hitting the power button. When i turned it back on both mw cd-rom and my cd-burner were not detected during the start up. My cd-rom tray wont even open but the other will. I checked the connection of the cables and all seem to be tightly connected. This is a big problem cause now i cant even re-install windows. Please Help me

Ed.

Since U opened the CPU to install the new memory modules first check ani power or data connections. Every time U turn on your computer every single device makes a Power On SelfTest, in CD Driver usually the leds flashes and some make some noise, think of them as the beeps the computer makes at every startup. If you see no led flashes or no noise in the CD you might the power cables. If the CD units seem to get awake then maybe your problem is the data cable. Check at the PC BIOS if the computer can autodetect the units (take note of the HD geometry before this and write it down, just in case) If the BIOS is unable to autodetect the CD units for sure either the power or the data cable are disconnected. If the BIOS actually can detect your CDs then someone else will have to enlight us. Good luck.
