When I try to open files in Microsoft word, the system starts loading, then it won't finish. When trying to end task, system brings up white text box that states "System is dangerously low in resources." Question: How do I keep Winword from crashing? also, when I try to close programs out to open space I keep getting a Error:OE:0187:BFF8E64B message from the system.

Wow. Wow. Wow. After 5 hours and probably 50 restarts later, I found this remedy for the Word 2000 freeze. I'm working on an important project, and I am very grateful! Normal.dot, I banish you forever.

Yes, I had the error message OE:0187:BFF8E64B . I could have spent hours pouring over my repair books. This website saved me time and money. I don't know who the genius is that said to rename normal.dot, but so far it has worked. Thank-you!

Thank you Paul. It worked perfectly. Just curious, do I have to coninually search for normal.dot and rename itr normal1, normal2, normal3, etc.? Or is this a one time repair/fix? thx.

this solution posted by Paul worked for me too! This problem took me ages to sort out, but the solution is simple...Or at least it was for me! I believe it occurs because the normal template that Word 2000 uses is damaged. Under the start menu, point to search. Search for normal.dot on the C-drive. Rename normal.dot to something else, such as 'normal1.dot' or 'oldnormal.dot'. Do this for each of the normal.dot files that you find there (obviously don't rename two the same). Close the search programme. Try opening Word now and it should work.
