Hi, quite a few times now I've had the situation where the computer hangs when I try and boot up or shut down. I have to press reset. This by the way is the same computer with all the other problems earlier on in this bulletin board. I've checked the event viewer though and it doesn't seem to have logged event errors or application hangs. What could be causing it, and should I be worried? Thanks, - Jo.

Windows XP really concentrates on starting services instead of the bootup 'msconfig' that you are used to working with in the past. Now that you know what is causing the problem (or theorized at least), I would check out the services again and see if you can find something related to it. If you find it, change the setting to manual. You can delete all the files in the driver folder you specified. However, I am not sure of the results. I think the computer will still try to launch it but this time, it will not have the files to work with and will cause an error more serious. I am not sure you are having a problem with a driver. I would concentrate on an associated program and uninstall that in the control panel. Reinstalling a program or driver would definitely be the first step. Computerpilot

Excellent idea, why didn't I think of thta? Right, I know what it is now, when I first had the PC I installed a printer driver for a multi function device called an Infotec MF10, aka Ricoh Aficio FX10, aka Office Styler - this is the name of the multi function driver software. It's something to do with that driver, which I subsequently tried to remove because the printer is apparently known to cause problems under 2000 and XP. A colleague of mine in Germany had to have hers uninstalled. I now use a Fujitsu PrintPartner which works as a PnP, and just use the MFP as a stand-alone fax and copier. So logically I need to get rid of the Office Styler stuff, but how? The path of all the things with this in the filename is as follows: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\W32X86. There are various dlls and dat files, as well as configuration settings. I looked at msconfig but I can't find anything resembling it... Anyway it is a relief to know it isn't something as sinister as a trojan, but it would be cool to move it, if you could help there. Thanks, Jo.

Problem with my advice!!!I would guess that the Event 7000 RFWSLPT service is probably causing the problem. I still have no idea what that is. It might be some sort of trojan or spyware. I think if you can get that service to stop initializing during boot, your 'hang' problems will cease. I would take a look as Start, Run, type: 'msconfig'. Take a look at what is trying to startup and see if you can find something similar. In addition, I would run a search on your hard drive for a file name like 'RFWSLPT'. This might give you a hint to what program is trying to start. Hope this helps. I know that you are probably really frusterated with your computer right now but hang in there, it will get better.
