sorry 4 not being very technical.........I have a problem whereby my pc is starting to run very slow now, probably not being helped by the fact that scandisc or defrag wont run. I have tried closing down all programs b4 i start but it just tells me that windows or another program is writing to the C drive. I have tried using PC Pitstop which offered an auto fix whereby scandisc kicks in b4 'most' progs open - but STILL It wont scan, please help!!

Actually, in Windows 98 you can run defrag in safe mode and it actually works better that way. Also, scan disk should run in safe mode, but if it still won't, you should go to the DOS prompt (it should be listed under "programs" on your Start menu), type "scan disk" (without the quotation marks) and hit enter. That will run scan disk for you but be warned, it will take a long time, especially if it finds errors. If it finds a lot of errors you may need to reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything to fix it but PLEASE don't try doing that yourself. Get someone really good with that to do the reformat and reinstall. But that should fix the issues.

Normally, I would offer a fix for your software. However, this time I have I make the suggestion to 'let be' or upgrade OS.Win9X operating systems that have been running a long time tend to exhibit this behavior. You can try to find a software that has a better defrag/scan disk operation, but I do not think that will solve your problem. Unfortunately, I am unaware of any fixes and would be interested if any readers had a good suggestion. I do not think you can run these operations in 'Safe Mode' but I would guess it is worth a try (F8 during bootup). I do know that the Windows 2000 and XP operating systems do not exhibit this behavior. You should also consider RAM upgrade if you computer is running very slow. Depending on how old it is, Windows ME does offer a good boost in speed for Pentuim II or K62 processor systems. Hope this helps. Computerpilot
