CD ROM and CD burner not working Post a Reply
From: Donna on 05/27/2000
When putting CD's into my CD rom drives, response comes up "device not ready, retry, cancel, abort"
However, when I check the status of these drives, and the properties it says the device is working properly.
I've tried removing CD rom drives but on rebooting the system, it does not recognize that there is new hardware, and upon checking the device manager, the drives are still there.

Is it possible for you to tell me if there is any thing I can do to fix the system, or if I need to take it in to a technician.

Thank you.

My re-writer is a RWD RW2224 and the other one is a ATAPI. When I remove the drives and reboot my system my system does not add new hardware and when I check for the device it is still there. Yes my drives are generic one is GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE47 and the other is NEC FLOPPY DISK.When I check the properities for the CD-ROM drives the system says its working properly and the diagram shows that the space is all used up but the figures read bytes used 0 bytes free 0 bytes. I don't know much about computers but I have a HSP Micro Modem 56 and a real Pentium II 233. This is the best i could do at this time. Maybe if you could tell me were to look i could be of more help.

Assuming that you're still monitoring this thread and still having the problem, another possible solution might be to disable DMA useage for the drives. Some motherboard/drive combinations don't support it and attempting to use it in such cases can cause hangs and general sluggishness (in my expirence anyway).

*Note:It's good practice to make note of any changes you make in case you should need or want to set them back.

To disable DMA for CDROMs:
In Device Manager double-click CDROM -> double-click *your brand* (where *your brand* is the name that shows up Ie. Mitsumi, NEC, HP, etc.) -> settings -> then uncheck the DMA box. Click Okay. You will then be prompted to reboot. Do so at your leisure, but the new settings won't be used until reboot. This may or may not solve the problem, but it's worth looking into if you're still having trouble.

I also have a similar problem. I have a Sony CD ROm that works and a Sony CRX140E that is always not ready. I have had some success in fixing the problem by reconfiguring the system. I removed the network card, sound card etc and then gradually added them back until it stopped working again. Appears that the CD burner and PCI slots 1,2,5 are incompatible.

I would recommend going to a techie. If you are till following this thread.

Cheers
