Her computer has a surge protector, however after the storm, when she boots up the computer, it sends and error message to "check signal" and it shuts down? Can anyone help me out here?

I've seen that before.... When a motherboard was blown. The signal is being generated by the monitor, which isn't receiving a signal from the video card. Assuming the video card were still good, she should STILL see the lights flashing and all as a normal start-up. If she doesn't see that, then her MB is probably fried. Sorry to bear the bad news--but she could check the power supply first--which might be the culprit.

However, when I saw that same thing the motherboard was fried.

Good luck.

Ask her to hold down the CTRL key while turning it on. You should be able to get into Safe mode from there you can do most things but not everything. Lighting could have caused a power surge but since she is at least seeing some things on the screen that means the monitor didn't blow up and neither did the computer.

Check to see if she has anything connected or on while she is turning the computer on. Signal might have ment a modem was on. Generally if power is turned off and on Scandisk would start up. Make sure to have any floppies taken out and turn any external modem off.

This should help a bit. Sorry I couldn't tell more but if you give more information to a tech it could get more details
