Error in vnetbios during boot of windows me when n Post a Reply
From: Bob on 07/28/2001
Gateway machine with AMD 950 mhz processor runing Windows ME.
Get the following in white letters on a blue screen during boot. Hitting any key twice clears the message and things are normal thereafter.

An error has occured.
Press enter to return to windows.
Press ctl-alt-del to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications.
file name vnetbios(01) +000007C7 error:0E:028:C007606B
Press any key to continue

Attempting to use "network places" in Windows ME and Network neighborhood in Windows 98 to establish an ethernet network. The ethernet card in the Gateway machine is Linksys LNE100TX Fast ethernet adpater.

Once I have hit any key twice and the boot proceeds, the functions of the network are normal. All shared files visible.

If netbeui protocol is removed, then the boot proceeds normally, however, the network does not work. No shared files can be accessed.

The vnetbios.vxd file is 38 kb, dated 6-8-2000 at 5:00 pm.

Two Windows 98 machines function normally with network neighboorhood on the same ethernet network. The three machines are connected using a netgear ehternet hub.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem on 2 machines with Windows ME. I believe it is down to the PCI Linksys network card.

I got over the problem last year by going into the BIOS and telling it that I had a "legacy" network card in the particular PCI slot and to reserve the interrupt for this card alone (you can't share IRQs with the card unless it is with IRQ steering). That got rid of it. I have just transferred the card to a second PC with Windows ME - same fault. I'm just about to go into the BIOS to make the same changes.

If the suggestion made by 'Ash' does not work, you may try a reinstall of the NETBEU protocol. I think that should replace any damaged files that might be causing the problem.

I am having an identical problem. Did you ever find a working solution? Of course, you'll probably never see this since your original note was from over a year ago.

Regarding the vnetbios error, it caused by a corrupt dial up net working entry in the windows registry. To get around it bootinto safe mode by repeatdly hitting F8 on sartup and choose safe mode. Then go into control panel and double click on add remove programs. Then click on the windows setup tab and double click on communications and then uncheck dial up networking and close all windows and restart. It should solve the problem and remember to check up the dialup networking later. If this does not work you have to use regedit to manually delete all instances of vnetbios.vxd after making a backup of the registry. Best OF Luck
