Dave,You must be using the buggy Win98 OS, which affects most computers, but not all. There are several patches available for the shutdown bug--you may try one of the others. Disabling the audio for exiting Windows has been found to remedy the problem in some systems (My Computer > Control panel > Sounds). Another option is to disable the fast shutdown feature in Windows.
I saw other options that can be found in Doug Stanley's column at the Tampa Tribune. You can search his data base at the Tampa Tribune's web site. You might consider upgrading to Win ME, which fixed the problem for me. But then again, the Win XP OS is due out in October.
