The best advice I've gotten seems to be to format and install another OS, but when I attempt to do this at the C:, it continues to give me the same message...that the particular command I've typed in is "missing or corrupt". How do I format the disk?

I got the same problem last week, and it was even more serious because i had no file windows.ini anymore.
But no, it's solved. How ?
1) go to a friend that have Windows/ME or even WIndows/98-se
1) make a copy of his file "Ifshlp.sys" on a floppy disk
1) start your Home PC with a Windows/ME bootable floppy disk.
2) at the a: command prompt, eject your ME bootable floppy disk and put the floppy disk with file "Ifshlp.sys"
5) copy the file "Ifshlp.sys" on your directory c:\windows\system
6) eject the floppy disk.
7) rebboot your PC
Follow the same procedure if VMM32.vxd is missing.
That's all !
