I was experiencing the same problem on a Win98 SE machine with Norton AV installed, IE version 6.0 with the December cumulative patch for IE installed (Q313675), and a plethora of Adobe apps and office suites.I booted it up and let it sit at the network prompt, then went to the server to back it up over the network. After 10-15 minutes, got the above blue screen. Rebooted the machine, left it at the network login prompt again, then started backup again. The screen saver kicked in and it was jumbled looking.
Booted up one last time, this time logging in, and I turned off the screen saver. Never happened again.
Screen savers are TSR's (terminate and stay resident) programs and have been the problem to many people's machines. Keep this in mind when troubleshooting problems.
