like so many others on here i'm having the same problem. I have Win ME and when i go to start my comp. after the logon window it tells me that "explorer caused an error in shell32.dll explorer will now close". after that i have no task bars, no start menu, no icons, nothing but my background and my mouse arrow. Is there a way to extract the necessary file from my Win ME reinstall cd in dos mode cause that's the only way it's possible to do anything cause I have no options in Windows. If anyone can help please please please let me know :o) either through email @ warehouse22499@netsacpe.net or just a reply. Thank you so much.Peace, Joe

You must think I am talking about a Compaq System Restore disk. These types of disks will format your hard drive(s) and reinstall Windows (deleting all your files). You should probably find a computer friend to help you out with my suggestion. They will probably be able to get the startup disk rolling and know the correct commands in DOS that is needed to restore the system files (your SHELL32.DLL problem). If you need further assistance, just post back. Computerpilot

See the following link:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q279736 How to Start the System Restore Tool From a Command Prompt (Q279736) This should give you instructions on how to use the System Restore tool. I do not believe that you need to install a new version of the SHELL32.DLL file. However, I would let the system restore tool figure this out. If the tool does not work, then post back and I will help you pinpoint the issue. Computerpilot
