Ken, YOU ARE THE MAN! I couldn't delete the file normal.dot, but thanks to your advice, I deleted the whole Templates folder and fixed the problem. You put an end to all my worries and problems!

I had this problem running Windows 98 and Microsoft Word 2000. I found the solution here to delete Normal.dot. I was unable to delete this file, as I got an error message. However, I deleted the entire "Templates" folder in which the Normal.dot file resides, and this solved the problem along with one other thing: I had to uninstall the recently-installed Winfax PRO software.

Deleting Normal.dot worked for me, too. Thanks! I'm still puzzled why deinstalling Word, then reinstalling it has no effect on this problem. Shouldn't that file be deleted or re-written by the reinstall?

Little did I realize that when I searched for this error I would come across the same message board that I had used about a month ago to solve this problem. I did what I had done the last time (find the Normal.dot file and delete it) and it works again.

You guys are awesome. I tried doing something with officeAV.dll that another site suggested and it didn't work. Thanks a million for the Normal.dot fix. BTW, try Normal in caps when Finding.

Well I managed to delete the normal.dot template, and still, no dice. I am still getting the invalid page fault. Now alot of other errors seem to be coming up like kernel32 errors. I have no idea what those are.

Any help appreciated.

Hi,

I have looked around your board, and thought that I too should delete the normal.dot template. When trying to do so, it says "Access is denied". So I went into the properties, and it was not checked off at all, so I tried it again. Still unable to delete the file. Any suggestions on how to delete it?

Please write back ASAP. My program keeps closing, and I am getting very frustrated. Write me at:

normal.dot is a template file that sometimes becomes corrupt. deleting the file forces word to create a fresh template.

Normal.dot is the default template for Word when it first starts. It typically saves all the default settings in Word in the file. At times, this file can become corrupt or have conflicting settings. Therefore, it is necessary to delete the file. Word is programmed to write a new Normal.dot file when it is unable to find it. Therefore, the deletion of this file should not cause problems with Microsoft Word.

If you are getting an error message that files are missing, I would recommend you either run a repair of Microsoft Word or completely uninstall and resinstall the software.

I delected Normal.dot and now WORD 97 opens but with the message that there is still one or more files missing.

First, what is Normal.dot?

Do I need it for anything else?

How can I find out what files may still be missing?

Is there a way to see what is missing from my WORD(& installation?

Thanks!!

At least I can get in now!!
