Thanks for the fix. I ran across this issue with a legacy machine that I had to drop in place quickly when the Daughter Of Boss decided that she was going to work here over semester break.

I've already wasted an hour or so with the obvious "uninstall/reinstall" route.

Gotta love the two second fixes.

Thank you so much as this fixed my problem completely in about 10 seconds when I was about to wipe the hard drive clean and start over!

My firm pays many people to "fix" out network and computer problems. Their solution to this was replacing the harddrive. Thanks for this simple, and almost unbelievable, fix.

Indeed you people do rock.

the only flaw in the fix is when I do a search for excel.xlb the file only shows up as "Excel" without a file extension.

However, when I clicked properties it displayed as an .xlb, I renamed it and, 'voila' success!

Thanks a million!

Thank you very very much!!!!!! Thought I had a virus due to the macros that I use in excel...Was about ready to reformat my hard drive after messing with everything to try and fix my system. The Problem: Office 2000 Pro. Excel would not run even after reinstalling. After using "google" with the search "Office 2000 excel general protection fault" I came across this site....Renamed the file "excel.xlb" and reinstalled Office 2000....Back in business - Thanks again!!!!

Once again, this suggestion proved successful.

I had reinstalled Office 2000 SR-1 and run a Thorough Scandisk. Neither option fixed this error. Nor did a complete uninstall/reinstall of O2K. Thank god for Google and this website. I was up and running again in 30 seconds.

Thanks everyone,

Spencer

Worked for me also. I found the file located in C:\Windows. Do a search for *.xlb and you should be able to find it. Ours was named with the user's name followed by an 8.xlb. For example username8.xlb. Removing it allowed Excel to run fine.

worked for me too. thanks!

------- original message -------
I use Win 98 and had the same problem. I removed and re-installed Excel, also no effect. However, check the excel.xlb file, which is normally in c:\windows\application data\microsoft\excel. It stores customisations you made to excel (like toolbars etc). Mine had become corrupt, but when you remove and re-install Excel this file is not replaced. Rename it to something else, and then try running Excel again! Worked in my case.

My problem: Windows 98 SE, Office 2000 with Excel SR-1 (9.0.3821). Starting Excel, get Excel has caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE. Renaming excel.xlb file in c:\windows\application data\microsoft\excel and restarting Excel saved my bacon too.

Folks,
I have received similar messages - the most recent this morning as [KERNEL32 caused a General Protection Fault in module USER.exe at 0003:00003987]. I am using EXCEL 97 - part of MSOFFICE 97 PRO - on Windows 98 - HP Pavilion 6465. I can't find any file named EXCEL.xlb.
I first experienced the problem sevral weeks ago. At that time I was able to use my CD ROM containing OFFICE 97 PRO to load the EXCEL application successfully. But since that first (and only) successful try last week I have been unable to load EXCEL from anywhere. Nor am I able to proceed when I click on any shortcuts to EXCEL sheets...the system gets a busy hourglasss and the only way to get out of it is to Ctrl-Alt-Del or sometimes hard stop by switching off power.
Someone has suggested the following: Your computer probably needs an enema. Your best bet is to save all your documents to CD roms or floppies, format the hard drive and reinstall the Operating System and applications.
Another has suggested that I use the add/remove function to uninstall the one I have (copy sheets to a different folder just to preserve them) and then install Excel.
I found the following information about the two applications: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel is 5476 KB; M:\OFFICE\Excel is 5469 KB. To my knowledge no updates have been installed. This difference in sizes concerns me.
Any ideas at this stage of the game would be most welcome.
