SERIOUS | winword.exe repeatedly disappearing [OFC Post a Reply
From: Computerpilot on 09/06/2002
After you install Word, is the exe there? Is this an issue that after some time, the exe is deleted?

I was just thinking, what if you made a copy of the Office 97 install disk and the exe file was not on the copy? Of course, if you do the install and the exe is there, then this would not be an issue to concern yourself with...

I am unaware of a macro/VB/Trojean like this. However, trojans usually cannot survive an FDISK and CMOS reset/update. Actually, I am unaware of a trojan that can survive an FDISK. Besides, if you are networked, why wouldn't other computers be infected? Are you networked? Of course, you are aware that it is definitely possible to write some VB to do something like this.

What happens after you copy the exe back on the hard drive? How long does it take before it disapears?

Get back to me, I am interested in this! I have never heard of this happening and would be interested in your story/solution.

Thanks!

Just to let everybody know how i solved my problem which everybody else is having regarding Word disappearing off my hard drive. I went to the online virus scan on www.symantec.com, which indicated that i had the w32.klez.h@mm virus. I downloaded the software which removes the klez virus from my computer and it worked. I reinstalled word, tried it and now its fine.

Prior to going to the web page, i installed Norton Antivirus and the same thing happened as what happened to Word. The program would start and then about 10 seconds later would disappear. After removing the virus, Norton worked as well.

Hope this helps everybody.

I found that the winword.exe file was being reformatted and moved to the c:\windows\prefetch directory. After trying everything I knew, I received an e-mail from trendmicro.com offering a free virus scan. After several attempts to install "housecall", it finally worked. Five viruses were found, even though I have been using McAfee for virus protection. Viruses cleaned from my system by the free virus scan or by using scan results to erase infected files were PE Magistr A, Worm Klez.H, Worm Hybris.plg, Worm Hybris.B and PE Elkern.D. I did not find the Atom virus referred to in a previous post, but did erase a file named atom.exe before doing the scan. I hope this helps anyone else who is having this problem.

Same problem here. I'm running XP and had used my copy of MS Office 97, including Word, happily for a couple of years before installing XP. I'm not technical and have been perplexed by this problem for 4 or 5 months. This is the first direct reference I have found. I will try the link provided in an earlier post. Thanks for the information and I hope it works.

I'll one up yah... Not only did winword.exe delete from my harddrive, but 'search' from the Windows XP start menu and from within Windows Explorer is gone...sure, I can select the option, but then search menu doens't populate. Even if there is a virus there, I can't search for it.

You got 6 months of use out of windows? Time to pay bill gates again, you didn't think it would last longer than that without paying him did you? The scam is working.

I have the same problem, Office 97 on XP, winword.exe keeps being deleted from the hard drive. I've uninstalled and installed several times and it keeps happening. Maybe a virus? This just started after 6 months of flawless use.
