Computer reboots itself when signing on to AOL Post a Reply
From: Tammy on 09/07/2002
Compaq with Windows 98.

When I enter the password for the AOL screen name and then press ENTER, the computer reboots itself. Could this be a problem with the modem or power supply?

One more thing, did you put heat sink compound or one of those heat sink transfer pads between the CPU and it's heat sink? Very important! The heat sink will feel cool while the CPU overheats! This would happen very quickly, probably within a few minutes of boot and you could damage the CPU that way.

Go to your BIOS and shut off any APM (advanced power management) or things like that. Check the temp on the CPU (touch the fins) and see if it seems to get way hot just before it shuts off.
Virus scan? Could be.
Anything loose? Try rattling it gently and see if something may be loose, sometimes RAM isn't seated all the way, try to reseat it and be very careful to check that its seated. Make sure the other cards and chips are seated.
Remove anything that is not needed, software and hardware, go to min system and then if that fixes it put each thing back on at a time.
RAM check?

I am having a similar problem with a new computer I am building for my dad. Everything appears to be working fine and then, all of a sudden, the system will reboot. I am running XP Home with all the latest SP and patches. Everything is new with latest BIOS, and drivers. Swapped out modem and still does it. Disabled NIC.

Receive the following stop codes on BSD:

0x0000008e, 0x80512982, 0xf04c2b88, 0x00000000

Any help will be appreciated - sure would like to send him a stable system - he's 82 and I am just happy he's not afraid to use it - but I don't want him to get discouraged.

Gotta love those compaqs...

It is probably a hardware problem with your modem. Right after you press 'Enter', AOL initializes your modem to dial out. If your BIOS detects a problem with power usage, it will automatially 'hit the reset button'. If you are having windows go through a full shut down/restart, then you have another issue at hand.

A way to test this.

You can use the phone dialer or query the modem in the hardware device page. In theory, the modem should shut down the computer in these cases as well.

Do you have a spare modem you can try? Also, you could try moving the modem in your box to another PCI slot. It is possible that the slot is bad. However, usually if this happens, your modem is shot too.
