I followed the post by: becks on 12/21/2009 and it fixed my problem for Word XP. I didn't have the programs that Ross' example listed. So if you are having the same problem I would suggest:

1. Start Word in Safe Mode like suggested when launching Word (Not opening a document).

2. Go to Help then Detect and Repair.

3. Select both options and allow the repair utility included with the program do it's thing before uninstalling any programs.

Hi all,

I am having trouble with my MYOB version 18. When I open it up at comes up with the message 'Runtime Error Program C:\myob18/Myob.exe Abnormal program termination.' It only have used to happen occasionally but now it happens almost every day! I had a look on the Windows help but there was only advice on Word at Explorer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

With regards to MS Office XP which will no longer be supported by MS effective July 2010; here's my solution:

go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\(USER NAME)\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Delete the Normal.Dot
(I have a daily backup of my O/S (via Argentum to my 200 terabyte).

Unless you've saved your Normal.Dot (which contains your toolbars, macros, etc.), you'll have to start afresh.

My longer term advice, remember to save your Normal.Dot frequently, I personally rename it & put it in an archives section (e.g. 20100410Normal.Dot). From the archives my Argentum automated s/w backs it into my external hard drive.

I'm keeping my MS Office XP; because I doubt whether the newer versions allow you to have the neat use of macros, pasting of active, dynamic spreadsheet.... at least it didn't happen with the that trashy Ultimate(ly Terrible) Office 2007.

I had the same Runtime error and Abnormal Program Termination when using Word 2002. I tried Detect and Repair several times using Save Settings and still got the error. I then tried Detect and Repair and restore default settings and the problem seems to be fixed. Thanks for the help!

I spoke to soon.
The detect & repair did NOT solve the problem

So I just tried the solution noted by

I disabled a add-in - Ad-Aware
so far so good
lets see if it continues without and error

Thanks for the nocrash site

The solution from becks below solved my problem. After I started Word in the safe mode, I did a Detect and Repair and told Word to return to the default settings. Even though Word went through a repair cycle, I'd be willing to bet that the return to default settings solved the problem. It got rid of whatever add-in or macro was causing the problem. Word had to be re-activated, but Internet activation worked without a hitch.

hey i kept getting the same message every time I tried to open word:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Program C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\office10\winword.exe

Abnormal Program Termination

The next time I would try to open it it would ask if I would like to use safe mode, which I would accept and that would work perfectly.

I tried ross's advice but either I didn't have the add-on suggested or I just couldn't find it!

In the end I randomly fixed the problem by (whilst in safe mode)clicking on the tab:
HELP followed by DETECT AND REPAIR.

I ticked BOTH options that pop up (go back to DEFAULT settings) and somehow this worked a treat!

hope this helps !

Following the directions posted (several down if your looking) allowed me to use the instructions found:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322201
to run the "Support.dot" macro via winword.exe /a

My problem was similar, yet Word would crash without said C++ abnormal program termination error as some are seeing.

The macro renamed my "Normal.Dot" file, hence forcing Word to recreate a new one. Problem solved for me.

Now back to my original search for the "Visual C++ Runtime Library" error.. because this fix was serendipity.

Same problem here. When I tried to use Word 2002 I received the runtime error message. I searched and searched Microsofts website and found no help at all. Finally I got frusterated and typed the error message in google: Runtime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\office10\windword.exe and got this page. I followed the advice here and removed the offending program (I don't even know what the program does) and whalla! Problem soved (so far). I was able to open a document and no error occured. Thank you!

I was getting this error on startup of Word and was not able to access any menus or documents before it shut down. Someone suggested renaming the "normal.dot" file on your computer to something like "xxnormal.dot". So far the error has not repeated itself and this is also not the first time the "normal" template got corrupted and has caused an error on my system so I'm pretty sure that it was the problem.

My BIG, BIG, BIG thanks to you, Ross, for shedding the light.
Your solution WORKS.

I tried to meet a dealine when suddenly this WINWORD.exe termination occured. I uninstalled and re-installed, ran detect/repair several times with no results. Knowing nothing else to do, I was on the verge of re-installing the OS though I did not believe it could solve the problem. In my very last attempt, I hit the jackpot: your solution :)))

Here's Ross' solution again:

From: Ross on 08/27/2002

Straight after posting the above message, I had another look at the microsoft support page and found what may be a solution. Check this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q322201

The problem, when it occurred, was intermittent, so it will take a while to ascertain whether it has been cured or not, but fingers crossed...

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot.

This problem was driving me absolutely nuts. However, I finally found a solution.

Check and see if a Microsoft program called "Remove Hidden Data" is installed on your computer. If it is, uninstall it! I was looking and looking for a COM add-in that was being installed by the Registry, and I finally found it.

For more info, go to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555220 I found the info provided on this webpage very helpful.

I'have the same problem in Word 2002. After few second after i open a document a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error appear.
The documents in question are all edited with previous version of Winword and are formatted using document styles. I think that the problem are related to document styles management in winword 2002.
I resolved the problem saving the "recovered document" as Word 6.0/95 type.
"recovered document" is the documenit recovered in winword after a program quit unexpectly.

i got the similiar problem, not exactly.

here's what my problem was:
everytime when i try to open a note in outlook 2002/NOTES, i always got a error:
"icrosoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Program C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\office10\outlook.exe
Abnormal Program Termination"

so i searched the website, and found most of those "runtime error"s can be solved by disabling a certain "Add-In". so u can try to disable the "Add-In" in ur application with this problem. try some times again and again, u may find which one caused the problem, so disable this and u are safe.

in my perticular case, i went to outlook/tools/options/other/advanced options/ and u can see there are 2 buttons related with add-in. the first one: "add-in manager", the two add-in in that category don't have anything to do with the crash, while the second one: "COM Add-Ins", there's an Add-In in that category: "powerword 2002 office add-in", disable that and i'm safe.

hope this helps!

I've been getting precisely the same error message in Word 2002 when I try to close a document. The only option given when the error message appears is to click 'OK', which closes both the document and the programme. When I next open the document, even if I clicked 'save' immediately before trying to close it, it has lost information - usually everything since the penultimate save when I was last working on it.

Numerous virus scans and re-installations have failed to clear the problem. The Microsoft website does not offer any help with this problem, which does not appear on any of its troubleshooting pages. In addition, the software support helpline for my computer is unable to help, suggesting only that it could be a problem with the hard disk and that I need to exchange my (four-week old) machine for a new one. Looking at the messages posted by those others who have encountered this problem, though, it looks as though it could be caused by an inability of Word to cope with certain documents from previous versions: some of the documents on my new machine have been loaded from my old one, which runs Word 97. But surely Word 2002 should have a retrospective compatibility with previous versions of itself?

If anyone has a suggestion for remedying the problem (and stopping me losing my work!), a reply posted on this site would be much appreciated.
