HP Laptop Pauses at POST (F1 to continue) Post a Reply
From: HPUser on 08/07/2004
Hello, I have a HP Laptop zt1260 and up until a few weeks ago worked great. Just recently, it decided that upon bootup, it will simply pause itself. By this I mean, the bootup screen appears with options such as: ESC - Choose boot media F2 - GOTO Setup ....etc.. Except it will stay there forever. And the only way I can continue booting is to hit F1, which isn't even an option on the screen LOL. Also, if I were to hit escape repeatedly to "choose" boot media I get a message after the POST screen that says, "SMART Hard Drive failure imminent, backup all data, or it will be lost!". But if I restart the computer and simply hit F1, it will boot into windows XP no problem. Any ideas? Thank you :)

you can disable S.M.A.R.T. in your bios (probably by pressing F2 "to enter setup" before it locks up.) (S.M.A.R.T. is Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting technology. S.M.A.R.T. is a feature of the Enhanced IDE (EIDE) hard drive specification that enables the operating system (OS) to query the drive's self-analysis system. If the self-analysis reveals a potential problem, users see a warning of possible future drive failure.)
