cd tray when you close it,ejects about 5 seconds later and remains open for about 5 minutes before it closes again. this process will repeat for as long as the computor is on.even if i hold the tray closed the system will not read a disc.

If antivirus cannot remove a trojan, how do I get rid of it.

There is a "Trojan" that will mess with your drive..Antivirus will not pick it up because its a trojan not a virus. Backdoor subseven trojan

Sometime a bad keyboard can create a possessed CDROM believe it or not. Disconnect keyboard and use mouse only to see if that helps. Also some bioses have to be set to allow boot when keyboard isn't present

I just tried booting my new PC with the CD-Rom cable disconnected. And the result is the same, the thing opens and closes while booting and then stays open. So my conclusion is that it is most likely a bad unit. Yesterday it behaved itself much better, and even played a DVD! But today it's crazy! I bought it at a surplus store but it might be used, so in my case I will try to take it back. Good luck to you!

I just built a brand new computer with Win98se OS and a Lite-On DVD player. This unit keeps opening by itself and will not stay closed either.

I recieved a call from a friend who has been having
the same problem with his drive tray. I recommended he do multiple
different virus scans, replace the drive, and reinstall the drive.
Which has all been said, this problem remindes me of an old joke application called coke holder that opened the cd tray when executed, this sounds like the samething only looped. It used to be a neat joke:)

Ummm, try a different CD drive. If the problem goes away, then it is the drive itself. Probably the switch is stuck, or the controller chip is going (receiving an intermittent "eject" command).

If you still have the problem, it is software. First, go into device manager, and uninstall the CD drive. Let it redetect and reinstall. See if you are still having the problem. If so, then it could be that the driver is corrupt . . . try replacing it.

first dissconect your ide cable from your cdrom drive's, leave the power cable if it still continues to open and close then you need a firmware update or a new drive, if this does stop it then you have a software issue either driver or virus

my father's computer has a similar problem but the cd tray never opens of it's own accord however it does randomly shut of it's own accord, usually just when you are half way putting a cd in!!. I tried posing this problem elsewhere on the net and the only response I got was that they thought it was a hardware problem rather than a software problem. Sorry can't help but will watch this space in the hope someone else can!

Got the same problem today (March 24). Spoke with local computer tech, who said it might be a bad drive (or bad switch). Used compressed air around switch, but still doing its 'possessed door opening act.'
Also downloaded newest antivirus definitions from Norton. Rebooted. And then did a full system scan. NAV found nothing. The 'possessed door opening' is not as frequent now; but it is still doing its thing...
The computer tech said it m-i-g-h-t be a virus; if so, to wait about a week (hopefully Norton will come up with a new antivirus definition if our problem is a virus), then download new antivirus definitions, and do another full system scan. He also said he knew of a similar 'possessed door' virus but that was a long, long time ago. Maybe some one decided to bring it back to life? Who knows. Keep in touch; would like to know how you get rid of your (our) problem. Did not see any one else to reply to your original post. Gotta be others with the same problem. Maybe it is a virus set to go to work around the third week of March? We have Win 98 OS. What Operating system is yours?
