Windows 98 error crash, can't boot up. Fatal E Post a Reply
From: GRADY on 10/13/2003
Please help me. I'm working on a huge document with Windows 98 and my computer crashed. I get the blue screen and it won't boot in safe mode or any other mode.

The error message is Fatal Expection error 0e 0167 :bff91dd8

Please provide me with some guidance before I kill myself.

THanks.

Sorry. Try running Scandisk from the command prompt. That might get you into a state where safe mode will run. I suspect a core file corruption. Like Kernel32.dll or one of the other biggies. If you can't boot to Safe after scandisk (don't do the surface scan) try restoring an old registry with scanreg. OR, reinstall windows. Horrifying.

Don't cut your throat just yet. You can get the document by going to Safe Mode, then the Start Menu, select Run, then type MSCONFIG, anter, then click on the "advanced" button on the front lower right, then check the box marked "Force compatability mode disk access" and restart. You will not have use of your CD or DVD drives or anything else that relies on protected mode drivers but you will at the very least be able to use Wordpad for the text or possibly email it somewhere where you can work on it. What it does is prevents the 32 bit drivers from loading. Mine is doing this very thing now. When I get a fix I'll share.
