Follow these instructions, step-by-step:

1)Start computer

2)Hit F8 when you get to the windows screen as much as you can to get to the advanced startup option menu.

3)choose the option to start to command mode.

4)type:
cd c:/windows/system32

5)type:
ren hal.dll hal.bad

6)type:
cd\

7)type:
sfc/scannow

8)restart computer (control-alt-del)

The system file checker should find that the hal.dll file was removed from the system and replace it.

For any reason this does not work, post back and I will give you a bit more difficult instrutions on how to replace the file manually using the CD.

Life in the computer world has taught me a few things about business that was not taught in college. There are no 'Lemon' laws in IT or computer. Manufacturers have be exploiting this for years. It is sad how consumers are being 'screwed' over by so many of these issues and bad support. You would never get a car company to admit that there is a problem with the brakes on a new car unless the government intervenes and there are tests that are run. In a computer, if there is a little indication of a problem, then the manufacturer does not hesitate to put in a new part and call it a flaw because there are no ramifications of this action where there would be in a car.

-step down from soap box-

I hope you get your problems worked out. I am sure that your computer shop will reinstall your operating system as many people will do. Hopefully, you will not loose any data.

THANK YOU so much for your follow-up. Unfortunately, I took my computer to a computer shop early this morning BEFORE I heard back from you! Now I wished I had tried what you've suggested first! I just put a brand new hard drive in my Sony Vaio laptop that is ONLY six months old and then this happened. The computer shop is now telling me it may just be a "lemon". I'll see what they say tomorrow and get back to you.
