ThinkPad blank screen Post a Reply
From: John on 08/23/2003
ThinkPad T21 type 2647-4BU running XP-Pro. Worked fine yesterday. Today on startup it makes all the noises it normally does, indicates HD access, but screen stays blank. Turned completely off, even removed battery and put back in. Tried again with and without AC power. Same result. Sounds fine but screen is blank. To eliminate the OS (and maybe a virus), made a W95 boot floppy from an old system here and started on that. (I'm using that old system for this note). This time accessed the floppy for a quick startup. Power switch turns it off more quickly, as you would expect. But still a blank screen. Do these things have a video mode you can inadvertently turn off? Or . . . is there a video connector inside that can simply come loose? This was an EBay purchase I got about six weeks ago, so I am on my own. This is the first problem it has had. Thanx for any help.

I seem to have the same problem described here. the laptop was put away for a couple of months, given up for dead. I recently tried it again and to my surprise it booted without a hitch. However, after shutting down after a few hours of use, it was unable to boot again. Anyone else who has had this problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi there. Ive just bought an old IBM Thinkpad. It too suffers the same problem as you have had. Mine works fine on an external VDU but not much happens with the TFT. I have stripped it down looking for loose wires, but i cant see any. I do however notice that the screen changes its shade of grey/black when you change between display modes. Also, I could have sworn i say the windows logo when i was sat by a window and bright light. I thought maybe the backlight was broken, but i cant reproduce this result with a lamp etc.

I suspect the videa card inside is malfunctioning. I wonder if there is anyway of using an external device as the viseo card. Sounds impossible to me!

I hope you have luck in fixing your laptop John.

After posting that I shut down the old W95 box and connected its display to the back of the ThinkPad. To my great relief everything appears to be working fine except the local LCD display. Fn/F7 turns the external monitor display on/off, but does not do anything for the local LCD. So I've narrowed the problem to the LCD, but don't know where to go from here. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
