WIN XP - any DOS application freezes in DOS/CMD full screen.
Runs OK in windowed mode, with alt/enter freezes.

One solution I found was to use a DOS emulator, like DOSBox (www.dosbox.com), which Google found for me via another forum. I've managed to get some old DOS games to run in DOSBox.

There are some other suggestions at that forum, too: http://forums.techguy.org/dos-pda-other/401241-dos-programs-xp-development-software.html .

You can try this, if nothing else not works:

BIOS Setup -> Advanced Chipset Features -> Memory Hole At 15M-16M = Enabled

Hi, guys !!!

I'm sorry for late answer, but I've discovered this problem some months ago, without solution. In fact, the solution was to set-up all DOS *.pif files to work in large window mode. Today I've found another problem, and decided to solve both. Luckily, I've crawled to this site, and finaly found a solution. Thanks for your help, the problem was in winio.sys and htpatch.exe, exactly as mentioned above.
Removing them did the goal !!!

Bravo !!!

BTW, both problems were on ASUS motherboards with SiS 650 chipset.

Good luck to all !!!

Just to say thank you for the advice to delete winio.sys. I built a new computer with a HP Quadro 4 200NVS card, Aopen AK79D 400Max, two Phillips monitors – big expense. The screen frozen when I went into full-screen mode in a DOS BOX, to run a program essential to my work, thus a calamity if it did not work. Any way, winio.sys was hiding in a little utility from Aopen called SilentTek, which allows you to monitor the motherboard temperature and fan speed. Delete this and the full-screen DOS-Box works.

On my ASUS P4S533-MX mb with bios v.1004 there wasn't any problem. After upgrading bios to v.1006 I've seen the same problem.
Deleting winio.sys solved it. This file used by htpatch.exe which came from SIS AGP driver (v1.13 in my case).
So look at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
If there is HTpatch (%Systemroot%\htpatch.exe) - delete it!

It seems to me that the old bios doesn't support HT and htpatch has to be needed. And the new one doesn't need it or conflicts whit it.

Now it works ok!

I had this same problem here and solved it after I changed my graphics card driver for a similar one.
Of course I didn't let Win XP search for a better drive to me, I select it from a list.
Hope it works for you.

Hi,
I have the same problem. And no solution yet :( But I have some things to say and maybe it will help to someone.

I had this problem on 3 computers. Celeron III 800, Amd XP 1800+ and P4 1,7. The joke is that this computers have absolutely different harware. So (I except) this problem is somewhere in Windows XP. I changed drivers of chipset, graphic card and then I used all diferent drivers of everything I had. Nothing happened. The only thing that helped was reinstalling Windows XP :( Than it worked well. But only for couple of months. Than the problem raised again.

In fact the program does NOT freeze. It just do not respond any keyboard or mouse activity. When I switched to full-screen mode when the program had something to do (saving some 500 MB to disk) status bar went to the end and THEN program freezed. I couldn't stop the program (it was written to stop after pressing Esc) but program went on and did not respond at all.

More help would be appreciated :)
