Awesome idea, unfortunately the virus appears to be too smart to alow a rename of Normal.dot(claims the file is in use by someone else). - Yeah, I bet it is.

I am running Windows 98 and am writing my dissertation when today, the same problem as listed below happened to me. I freaked out as all I kept getting was "System Dangerously Low on Resources" everytime I tried to access my dissertation. People at the computer lab at my university offered to reboot my computer, to which I politely declined. Who knew that this posting here would do more than any computer lab could. Thank you!!!! It worked like a charm for me too!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!

This is a comment to "Sandy" who was having this same problem with Excel.

A friend of mine was also having an Excel problem that sounded very similar to the issue outlined in this thread. After reading the comments on this site, I suggested that he try locating the Excel equivalent of Normal.dot and rename it. He just e-mailed me to say that the "default" file in Excel is "excel.xlb," which he "moved to a backup directory" (sorry, not sure exactly what that means - his words verbatim). This, apparently, solved the problem.

He thanked me "a gazillion," but I think the thanks really goes to the poster of the original Normal.dot solution.

Read Terry's reply and method of solving "low system resources" in MS Word. I renamed normal.dot to old normal.dot and started Word and it worked great. Even though I'm running Windows 98 it still worked. Great stuff. Saved me a hell of of a lot of time.

As I've seen the same error message at times (although I would doubt that it's anything to do with all the other problems I seem to have), and as everyone seemed to think that this was a miracle fix, I thought I'd try renaming Normal, too. All my Autotext entries promptly disappeared, and I had to bring poor old Normal back to life again. I don't know if there's a quick way of copying all the Normal Autotext entries to the re-named Oldnormal file ... ?

So simple. This is the second time I've had this problem - on the other occasion I got hold of all my computer nerd friends and their only suggestion was to completely clean the computer. That's what I did, losing all my personalised information. And I was cursing and just about to do the same again this morning when I thought I'd just try out Google. Renaming one small file from normal.dot to oldnormal.dot. It worked. Thanks a million whoever is responsible. There are drinks waiting for you in London also.

I figured I would add this since it may help others.

Solution if Word 2000 does not open and you get the "system is dangerously low in resources" message:

First, from Start button went to "Find" --> "Files or Folders..."

Second, entered "normal.dot" in the "Named" box ("Named and Location" tab). Click "Find Now."

Third, highlight the "normal.dot" file and right-click --> "Rename"

Fourth, change it to "oldnormal.dot" Hit "Enter."

That should do it. Accessing Word was no problem after using this method. I didn't even have to restart the computer.

Once again, thanks to the originator of this solution! I'm sure you've saved a number of people from a nervous breakdown.

Whoever posted the normal.dot to oldnormal.dot for locked Word fix is a friggin' genius. If you are ever in Minneapolis, I will buy you as many beers as you can drink. I could not access my dissertation and was about to freak out. I also checked microsoft.com with absolutely no help and was about to reload the software. Decided to give Google a chance. Damn if the solution didn't take under 10 seconds after checking this site. Nocrash is now officially bookmarked. Nice work.

Whoa baby!

I was almost ready to upgrade from Win 98SE to XP to fix my hung Word 2000 crash-syndrome. I am a writer and music reviewer and . . .

After multiple re-installs of Word 2000, service pack upgrades, no help from Microsoft, defrags of Hard Drive, downloads of other bs, running "SFC" and days of assorted tooth-gnashing, and diddling, etc etc

I finally Google searched the error message:

"fatal exception 0E has occurred at 017F:BFF9DFFF"

and volia -- nocrash.com saves the day.

I renamed "normal.dot" template as suggested! Do not delay and your Monday morning will be like a Sunday afternoon! Schweet

Thanx folks

After reinstalling my firewall, my antivirus software, and Word a couple times (I thought Word was bombing because of a problem with the virus checker) I found this web page with the advice to rename normal.dot -> oldnormal.dot. It worked like a charm. I am so happy to be able to do my work again. I was thinking of buying an iBook. Well ... I'm still thinking I want an iBook but now it's less urgent. THANK YOU.

Found you on the web and renamed normal.dot to oldnormal.dot as suggested, and just like magic, everythings working.

Thanks again for the this remedy.

Found Terry's suggestion below the answer to my problems. Frustrating...I should have looked here before reinstalling software and updates...oh well, one learns.
The minor work of re-customizing toolbars and default settings is worth it-at least my Word processor works again.
I will recommend this site to others.

Try this... found it in Microsoft's Knowledgebase and it worked for me.

Rename (or delete if you want to) all "normal.dot" files. I just renamed all of mine to "oldnormal.dot" (Microsoft's suggestion) and then restart Word. Works like a charm. Core of the problem is a corrupted normal.dot template that Word can't load -- it tries to load normal.dot as the default template so it hangs every time. Rename or delete normal.dot and Word will start up fine.

Hope this works for you.

Terry

There is a chance you are running a program that takes a lot of virtual memory or RAM before you open Microsoft Word.

I would try this troubleshooting:

Make sure all non-essential programs are not running in the background. Hit Control-Alt-Del to see all the processes that are running. If you are well-versed with computers, you should be able to determine what is necessary to run your computer. The only thing that I would definitely not stop is Explorer. This, you will need. Anything else that looks rogue you can stop (end task). Then run Microsoft Word. ARe you still getting the error message/freeze?

Check your memory totals in: Programs, Accesories, System Tools, System Information to see if all your installed RAM is running normally. It is possible that some of your RAM is malfunctioning and you can check to see the total RAM in your system with the system tool. If it is less than what is installed, then you have a problem. It is entirely possible that you might have bad RAM regardless of what the system tools show. Also, be sure that your virtual memory settings is 50% of your total installed RAM. By default, Windows will manage your memory settings by how much RAM you use. If you are into Digital Graphics and gaming, you will probably run quite a bit off your RAM and virtual memory. There are some programs out there that prefer to run mostly on virtual memory rather than RAM.

Do you have at least a Gigabyte of Hard drive space left? Make sure you have plenty of room for your virtual memory! A Gig of remaining room is what I recommend to my users.

Maybe I pushed you a little far with the RAM. I would highly suggest you troubleshoot easier possiblities rather than jump to the RAM possiblity. Really concentrate on other programs that might be running in the background that are taking your CPU's time and RAM's memory space. Some shareware and freeware are not always written well to unload completely from your RAM and it is possible that they may still be running even after you have closed the program. Again, don't run ANY programs and try opening Microsoft Word.

Another possiblity is that you have macros or visual basic programs running on your normal template for Word that may be loading into memory and taking too much room. Delete the Normal.dot file and reopen Word.

Post back for more suggestions if none of my help works. I have some other ideas that I can give based on this troubleshooting.

Computerpilot
