IEXPLORE caused a general protection fault in modu Post a Reply
From: Pablo - ARGENTINA on 04/13/2003
I hope somebody could help.

I'm running Windows98 SE and Internet Explorer 6.
After Internet Explorer is running for 2 to 15 minutes, I receive the
next error message:

"Iexplore caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE at
xxxxxxx.xxx.xx".

The numbers in "xxxx" somtimes changes.
It's an aletory problem but it doesn't allow me to work.

I tried to re-install Internet Explorer 6, but the problem doesnīt
dissapear.

Sometimes the same error message appears with other applications instead of IEXPLORE

I tried to find a solution in MS Knwledge Base but I didnīt find anything
that could help.

Please, if somebody can help me I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

Pablo Gimenez

Computer Tech here hailing from Myrtle Beach, SC. Seems the most of you having this problems the fixes are general patches and adware or spyware removal. Well heres yet another fix for this error if all the aformentioned fixes dont work heres yet another one. Microsoft does have an IE6 removal tool to remove IE6, but before u run this be sure to get a copy of IE5 or 5.5, whichever u feel safer running. Once you run the removal tool you'll need to reboot and install a previous ver. of IE. then you should be good to go.

Also other then Ad-Aware another really good spyware scanner is Spybot: Search & Destroy its a free download, all you need to do is search for it via google or some other engine. After you download this and install be sure to click the update button so you get the most recent dat files, at last count spybot has about 11,650 or so patterns it can look for. Once it finishes scanning be sure everything in red is checked and click fix selected problems.

Hope this works for the rest of you who couldnt get everything working ok.

I'm not sure which one worked becouse I tried both, scanreg.exe and tools/option/advance/uncheck enable 3rd party browser ext, but it deffintly worked. I was getting explorer caused a general protection fault in module user.exe about every 15 min, I havn't had any problem in the past week. Thanks for the help guys.

Sounds to me like many of you are describing symptoms of something called "browser hi-jacking". Ad Aware does help (be sure to download the newest version and update the pattern files online as soon as you install it) but you may have to get some professional help or really start digging into your registry files (which is only recommended if you have some specific guidance). Try downloading a program called HiJack This (google search works best) and run the utility BUT DO NOT ALLOW IT TO FIX ANYTHING THE FIRST TIME YOU RUN THE SCAN! Copy the report about what it found and post it on a site where someone might be able to interpret it best and tell you which items to allow the program to "repair".

Good luck to all with this affliction, I've started seeing more and more "hijacking" in my job and they're getting pretty insideous (sp?)

I use windows 98 second edition. The problem occured not only when using Internet Explorer but also when trying to change the screen resolution in system configuration and on other occasions.

I solved the problem by doing a full windows update. [IE-Menu: 'extra' - option: 'windows update']. The update for solving closing down problems seems to have made the difference. The documentation says that the problem often occurs on a system that has a lot of network computers attached.

Good-luck all!

Thankyou everybody for your suggestions.

But after trying with each one I couldn't solve the problem.

Sometimes the error message appears when I select "add to favorite"

Sometimes the error message appears when I right click on an image and I choose "save picture as".

If somebody could help me I will appreciate it.

Thanks again.

I also deleted my "*.pwl" files. It seems to make it better for a bit, but that might be my imagination. This all started when I accidently typed in the wrong URL and got on a porn site. It loaded a porn tool bar at the top of my explorer and set my startup page to be something really unsightly. I removed the tool bar in ADD/remove software, but call me crazy, my explorer has not worked correctly since.

I just thought I would add - I had this problem, I reinstalled IE 6.0 and that didn't help.

I had run AdAware over the last few months and it deleted the files correctly, but you need to change the settings to have it scan the registry too. Once I did a full scan of all drives and the registry it found a bunch more programs to quarantine.

After I rebooted, I did not receive any more general protection faults.

Good luck.

I am having the same problem. I am attempting to report the problem through the error reporting tools I seem to be missing from IE 6 sp1. Please, for the love of God, let me know if anyone can fix this!

I downloaded the Java Plug-in and installed it but it didn't solve the problem.

Thankyou anyway. I will continue trying to find a solution.

Possible Solution:

download the JAVA(TM) Plug-in 1.4.0_0.1 and it will override the IE user.exe

download at:

http://java.sun.com/webapps/download/DisplayLinks1.4.1_01

Or at

http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.1_01/index.html

Give it a try, it has worked for other people.
