Computer locks up with all 3D games Post a Reply
From: Wiegraf on 03/03/2003
Ever since I bought my athlon 7000, it's been hell.

I tried Quake 3 Arena, Diablo 2, Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights, and others.. it can be 5 minutes, it can be a half hour, but the computer WILL lock up.

I tried reformatting, updated to latest ATI drivers, upgraded from Win 98 to ME, I asked ATI support to help and they suggested I update my motherboard drivers, did that. nothing.

my previous video card worked perfectly fine with my motherboard... I just don't know what to do, return my video card? what?

I got an Amd2000 with 1 gig of ram (so it is not the ram issue as suggested by the other reply). My cpu has loads of extra fans, (so it is not the heat problem as suggested by some). I have a 128 meg geforce 4 grphics card and the same happens to me all the time. All my device drivers are fully updated and my windows is fully updated. But still any game in 3d crashes, locks up. I can play baldur's gate TOB in 2d but as soon as I tick the box that says 3d support the game will crash in like 1 min or like 3 hours but it eventually crahses! The same applies with diablo LOD (i must play that in 2d), warcraft 3, neverwinter -- it is really fustrating wanting to play but knowing you going to get kicked out so i dont bother...

Anyone out there actually know what is wrong and how to solve the issue?

I just bought a new computer:
Athlon 2600+ (2.13 Ghz)
512 DDR333 RAM
Integrated GeForce4 64mb card
120GB Hard drive
48-24-48 CD-RW

When I try playing Diablo2, the computer locks up. Even though the video test said that it recommends 3D graphics. When I select 2D graphics, everything works just fine. I have the lates drivers for the Nvidia GeForce4...it should be compatible.

I have the exact same problem... just not testing other games. I play diablo 2 LOD and for some reason, like you said, 1 min -4 hours in the damn thing locks up. I can definately rule out overheating. I got the Xaser III case with optimal heat dissapation(7 case fans, volcano 9 on the CPU and a GPU heatsink/fan). Anyone have any ideas?

Soyo Dragon Ultra KT333 black
AMD Athlon 2000+
512 Samsung DDR 333 RAM
Pine GeForce4 Ti4200 with 41.90 drivers
Quantum Fireball 20GB HDD
LiteOn CDR-W
OnBoard 5.1 sound, and LAN
NIC Realtel LAN(secondary card, just in case D2 gets pissy and "realm down"s me I change NIC and I automatically get new IP and can connect again :) )

Thanks, and maybe you're right....
But it doesn't overheat watching movies or playing non-3d games.

you could be looking at a heat problem, if the games work fine at first then the graphics card maybe suffering some heat issues or the CPU is suffering as well.

Look at trying to remove any cards located below the AGP Card and install an extra fan in the underneath of the AGP card. Also look at buying then new PCI fans that attach to the area you install your modems/soundcards
