From: Bill on 02/06/2003
Error message headed Winword
Winword has caused an error in WKWDADDN.DLL
Winword will now close.

Note: Multiple "Mail Merge" Tabs are appearing in the Tools drop down menu - is this related. I do not use Mail Maerge.

A year has gone since this post but for the rest of the world searching for an answer I'll post a reply.

I also stumbled into errors closing Word and the same problem of multiple mail merge in the Tools drop down menu and found the solution. It is an easy to fix bug in Word toolbars and the normal.dot file.

First off, make sure normal.dot exists on your computer at the default install location. Sometimes it has been deleted or write-protected.

Second, in Microsoft Word, click on View > Toolbars > Customize. Highlight each toolbar and click reset.

Exit and restart Word and all is well in the world.

I completely removed the Word Add-in, or whatever it's called, around two weeks ago and since that time WORD in my Toshiba Satellite has not shown this annoying message, not even once.
And to think that this message got on my nerves for almost two years!! The solution is so simple.

Has anybody tried to uninstall this Works Suite, Word Add-in, etc., completely and then to install MS office?

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to open a document that is located in the root folder of a hard disk or floppy disk in Microsoft Word 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Winword caused an invalid page fault in module Wkwdaddn.dll.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Microsoft Works Word Add-In included with Microsoft Works Suite is installed on your computer.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue:
If the document is stored on a hard disk, move the document to the My Documents folder before you open the document.
If the document is stored on a floppy disk, create a new folder on the floppy disk, and then move the document into the new folder before you open the document.

I seem to have a similar problem when using Word 2000 (Windows 98SE).
When I click "Save" I receive an error message, then doc becomes "Read Only."

I have a very similar problem. I get message: Winword has caused error in MSVCRT.DLL. Winword will now close.
The message could also appear as: Winword... error... WINWORD.EXE. This seems to happen when I am closing or saving files, particularly when I have been switching between applications.
I also have multiple Mailmerge tabs in the tools dropdown menu.
On another website, it was suggested that the Winword error can be corrected by setting the video performance accelerator to "none". I tried that without success. I am using Word 2000 with Windows ME.
