Just tried an alternative route:

1. Installed Windows (98) from scratch on a newly formatted disk
2. Installed the chipset drivers
3. Installed the Intel accelerator
4. Installed the SoundMAX (as the first) Asus P4PEdrivers

Checked that everything worked fine, then installed the other drivers and Windows updates - do remember the Direct 9.0b runtime!

NOTE: Make sure that the speakers are connected to the middle jack, the top jack is line input. This is easy to verify, as the board will "speak for itself" with an artificial voice during the boot procedure, regardless if the SoundMAX driver problem exists or not.

From the Analog Devices SoundMAX help page to FAQ #30:

...An error in the driver software may cause the audio to stop functioning on your system in rare circumstances. In some cases an error message will display "Digital Output is taken by another application". This has been fixed in newer versions of the driver but will occur in any driver prior to 5.12.01.3520. Removing or reinstalling the driver will not fix the issue. If you are seeing this failure the only way to fix the issue is to delete the following two registry keys within the Windows Registry. This should be done by someone with experience in editing the registry.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sensaura\Speaker]
"ChannelConfig"=dword:00000033
"SpeakerGeometry"=dword:00000000

After you reboot reset your speaker config and then everything should work properly...

SoundMax "digital output is taken by another application.":
Just installed an ASUS P4PE-X m'board. With the ASUS CD version SoundMax driver and with the latest driver download from ASUS' site, same problem. No other sound card installed, although there was on my old m'bd system using this same HDD. Uninstalled and reinstalled SoundMax. Removed and depowered all CD drives, disabled midi and game ports in BIOS, upgraded BOS to ver 1005. None of this changed a thing. SoundMax seems to install fine, but no output. What other application could be taking the digital output? Or s this just a bogus or default error message? No replies coming in from ASAUS on this. SoundMax sends you back to ASUS.

I had the same problem and resolved it. I went to www.driverguide.com, downloaded 3 different "soundmax" audio drivers (I chose the 3 with the highest success ratings), and forced Windows to install them. After each one failed, I re-installed the original driver that came with the P4PE, and to my surprise, it worked perfectly!

I've had the same problem after my PC was upgraded to this new motherboard. I can't play CD audio at all. It's very frustrating. If anyone has a solution, mail me (remove the **spam** bit, obviously) bgook@urban.net.**spam**au

I got this after using the P4PE with SoundMax drivers for about a month (1 HDD as primary master, 1 DVD-ROM as secondary master, no other audio card - Win 2000) with no problems.

What's changed is I've added in a CD-RW. With the CD-RW as either master or slave on the secondary channel, the problem recurrs. I've even swapped in a 3rd optical drive so I've eliminated the possibility of any bad drive firmware, I think. Seems to involve the wave output only(?) because audio CD's play fine from either drive, but winamp and WMP won't do audio.

However, if I bounce the SoundMax device (disable it and then re-enable under device manager) everything works fine. Problem is that I have to do this after every boot so something is wrong with the IDE channel perhaps?
