Explorer causes an invalid page fault in module mf Post a Reply
From: Bob on 01/16/2003
When I try to run Windows Explorer (computer uses Windows 98) I get an error message saying, "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If problem persists, contact the program vendor."
The details are:
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module MFC42.DLL at 016f:5f45bf8a.

I've searched the Microsoft Website but found nothing exactly like this. I've tried running sfc.exe and replacing corrupted system files. I've reinstalled Windows 98 several times. I've replaced Explorer.exe and mfc42.dll (actually, my computer has 11 copies of mfc42.dll in at least 5 versions in various directories; several of these are apparently installed by Windows 98 itself; others probably came with various software) several times also. One article on MS Website discussed compatibility problems between WinExplorer and Direct CD software, but this supposedly arises when you try to open Direct CD from Explorer -- my problem arises immediately when I click on the Explorer icon. The problem seems to have arisen after I ran some disk cleanup operations with System Suite 2000 so I installed System Suite, but that didn't help.

Other things on computer work OK but am crippled without Explorer.

FIXED!. I tried everything each of you recommended, developed two different kinds of work arounds, downloaded all the latest critical updates and service packs from Microsoft, ran sfc.exe so many times I can't count them, etc., etc. Something worked, or else something spontaneous and mysterious (isn't it all?) happened. I can't put my finger on any one thing, but something seemed to have worked. I have the use of Explorer again. Of course a couple more anomalies have turned up, but so far, minor ones. Thanks everybody for your help!

Update: "Invalid page fault in module MFC42.DLL" appears to be fixed!

I advised my friend to use Start/Run/MFC and replace OLEAUT32.DLL.

We then used F8 to boot to DOS and ran SCANREG /FIX to scan and repair the registry.

(We also ran generic VGA drivers & deleted her printers, which may or may not have contributed to the fix).

It looks like these steps fixed the problem.

Good luck with fixing yours?

Hi Bob,

A friend of mine is having a similar problem. For instance, every time she starts Control Panel, the MFC42.DLL error appears. We've tried replacing this file using SFC, and have also scanned for virus, but no success yet. Interestingly, the problem does not occur in Safe Mode, which suggests that it's due to either a device driver (video, printer, etc.) or corrupt registry.

Have you had any success yet? I'm going to suggest to my friend to try using generic drivers (VGA-mode video, delete printer, etc.) and also run SCANREG in DOS mode.

Hopefully one of us will find a solution. Please post if you do.

Thanks,

Stephan
