I was getting a fatal excpetion blue screen 0E 0187 BFF8E64B on Windows ME opening Word 2000. This was followed by two general protection faults (IPMON32 in USER.EXE and AGENTSVR in KRNL386.EXE). I deleted normal.dot and its shortcut to the recycling bin and that seemed to work. It must have been corrupt. I can now open Word and Word Documents.

THANK YOU! I could not open Word files or the Word program, except through MS Works, and got the error 0187 Bff8E64B message. MS Help did NOT. From the fixes suggested here -- delete "normal" files -- access to Word and files has been restored. What the heck are those normal files anyway? Method, for others: Click Start Open Search Type Normal Drag those files to recycle bin.

Mike, you are the best!!!!! I deleted the Word document labeled normal and was able to open Word which I could not do previously. My error message was a little bit different OE: 0177: BFF8E64B, but the solution still worked. THANK YOU

Mike, thanks - worked a treat. I now have not only a computer but also a much less grumpy family.Cathy - I did a search for normal.dot from the normal search routine in the start menu, and deleted it from there. Seems to have done the trick.

Clean hit, man! It wasn't my own PC that was crashing but that of a friend; now he considers me a computer guru & will have to spend me some beers... One Cheers goes out to you!

Many thanks, Mike, you provided a big hint to my problem too: the computer hung when starting Word 2000, showing the Word splash screen (no blue screen of death, no error message). I had tried everything (removing MS Office, installing MS Office, even installing Windows ME again) but it was only your hint that solved the problem. Thanks again!

RE 0E:0187:BFF8E64B - This suggestion worked! I was having essentially the same problem. Basically, I would get the OE error after trying to open more than one file in MS Word 2000 using a Dell Inspiron 4000 with Windows ME. The problem started without warning last week. I tried everything else short of reloading s/w and OS. I found no information anywhere until I saw this post after doing a search. And it worked! Thanks!
