I received the error when I tried to print preview or make any changes in setup. The Excel program would just lock up with the blue screen of death.
I did the uninstall and reinstall a number of times and even edited the registery all to no avail. I tried renaming the .xlb file and after almost a week of trying to figure it out, the rename worked.

Thanks.......

Charlie

Thank you for this discussion. I had a fatal exception error 0E while running EXCEL 2000 on a WIN98 machine. I did the uninstall and reinstall as the answers said, but no success prior to looking at your "blog".

I then renamed the .xlb files and voila! Success!

Thank you for having this error prior to me and for sticking around for the answers.

I have a problem where Word 2000 (from office 2000) will show 0177:BFF9DFFF error when i copy and paste an image from Chemdraw Ultra8. Also, when I attempt to modify the image (object settings>layout>in front of text). My system just wacks the blue screen up, then wont domuch else, if i press "any key to retry". My PC is running fine other than that. Win98se, Office 2000, ATI ViVo 64DDR, AMD-Athlon 1.2GHz, EliteGroup-K7KMA, 768DDR RAM. PC has recently been completely reinstalled (due to some dodgy vrus or something). All is fine except that.

renaming the *.xlb file(s) solved the problem for me with Excel. Thanks so much!

Excel 2k with Win98SE... hangs upon exiting Excel.--No more!

uninstall/reinstall won't delete excel.xlb and excel.xls which are probably corrupt

Never delete a file when trying to fix a problem. I learned that the hard way!

Just rename them to *_xlb.bak or something else, that way you can put them back if needed.

Look for *.xlb files in c:\
delete all of them, specially all thos erelated with the user (if a multiuser windows).

Everything should run OK from now. Until when? Dunno.

I did some additional digging and found this is a known bug in Office XP. The Small Business Edition came with my Dell and per Microsoft one of the components "CFTMON" can cause this error. It manages voice and handwriting input.

To turn this annoying office "feature" off go to Add/Remove programs for Office XP, look under "Office Shared Features" and turn "Alternative User Input" to "Not Available". Reboot and all should be well.

I have the same problem in Internet Explorer 5.5, SP 2. It always happens when I go to a favorite or use the back button. I'm also using a Dell PC (Optiplex.) Interesting...

Your best bet is to uninstall and reinstall Excel.
