Hi Computerpilot,I really hope you can help me! Running WMP V 8.0.0.4477, XP Home Edition 2002, AMD Athlon XP 1800+ on a MSI MS-6330 "Lite" Mother board, 1024 GB Ram, Soundblaster Live X-Gamer 5.1 and ATI Radeon 8500 LE. WMP will fire up but any attempt to load either music or movie file of any format, results in the exact same crash or technical error report: Error Signature: Appname: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 8.0.0.4477 ModName: mmswitch.ax ModVer: 0.9.4.0 Offset: 00004e86 Exception Information: Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0X00000000 Record: 0X000000000000000000 Address: 0X000000001d1c4e86 I went up to WMP 9.0 Beta Build 2600 (or was it 2800?), no change and the same crash. Did the XP rollback to the original WMP V8.0.0.4477, but still in same boat. Checked all over MSN website, but nothing matches the kind of failure I am experiencing. Any assistance is greatly appreciated, thank you, Dave

searching for mmswitch.ax, renaming it mmswitch.ax.bak, and then running media player enabled me to open mpeg files. This i had been unable to do since installing a codec pack upgrade. There was some info in the codec upgrade that i didnīt read carefully enough.Learnt to read the txt files a bit more carefully. Thanks

Here is something I found on the Internet:"Some players such as BSPlayer may install a DirectShow filter that interferes with the way Zoom Player selects audio tracks. The filter file name is "mmswitch.ax". You can unregister it by typing "regsvr32 /u mmswitch.ax" in its directory or by using the filter registration service on the "Options.Manual Filters" page. You may also need to reboot for this to take effect. " I think it will also apply to Media Player. Computerpilot

I think there is a software called 'Morgan Stream Switcher' that installs that MMSWITCH.AX filter in Media Player. I would find the file, rename it, and try again. You need to get rid of that filter to things working again. It is not a microsoft filter. I do not think you can work with both software at the same time. You will probably have to uninstall Morgan Stream Switcher.I think you can remove the filter by clicking on File, Properties, Advanced, and remove the filter. However, I have not worked with Media Player 9B yet and have very little experience with the version with XP (v8). Of course, this all means that you can actually get into media player. Computerpilot
