Problem starting Windows 2000 pro Post a Reply
From: Jack on 12/03/2002
Hello,
Well first off thanks for taking the time to help me out. My problem is that when I try to boot up my Windows 2000 Professional system, midway through the boot up process a scan disk window comes up. It says, “One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency”. Then it goes on and states, “Windows is verifying files and folders”. At 89% it says, “The size of C:\WINNT\system32\config\software.log entry is not valid”. At this point it states, “Windows has made corrections to the file system”.
Now, the boot process continues and the desktop appears for only about one second and then the computer reboots. And the exact same thing happens as stated above, so it’s like it’s in a loop- or that the correction has not been made to the software.log file.
I can start the computer, though, in safe mode with no problems. Therefore I was hopping that if someone was familiar with this problem and knew how to fix it in the safe mode if they could give me some guidance?
Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jack

I, too, have seen this happen on my Win2K system (clean install with latest SP-3), running FAT32. It doesn't happen often, but it has continued to occur since my first installation with SP-1, all the way through reinstallations on new drives with SP-3 ... always running FAT32. There is NEVER any problem found. I'm running a custom built box with Intel MB, P4, all BIOS updates, etc. Another BB posting mentioned there was a registry fix for this (apparently) false error message. I would be interested to know more about this. At least in my case I can rule out bad hard drives, as it's occurred on multiple installs on different drives.

It sounds like your hard drive is starting to fail. Usually, if Windows 2K starts to show scandisks (without your request), then it is a good sign that you are starting to have hard drive failures along a point on your hard drive.
