I work at PSU World Campus and a student running Office 2000 and Windows ME (yes, I said ME) experienced the same error message. We renamed normal.dot to oldNormal.dot and reopened Word. The student was back in business.
I did suggest that she should upgrade in the near future to XP at least...

I've used this solution for a few years now. It does work, but it would be nice is someone would figure out a way of keeping the normal.dot file from going haywire in the first place.

Can i just say - thank you. I've spent the last couple of nights trying to clean a friend's pc - full of viruses, spyware, trojans. But after removing them all, word still would not load - kept getting the message "System low on resources" - pc would then hang. About to give up, i searched google one last time - found your solution and it works brill. Again - thank you.

You should be aware that the "normal.dot" issue is a symptom of a virus. Go to Symantec.com for more info and make sure your antivirus software is all up to date. Just deleting or renaming the file will work for a time, until it becomes corrupted again.

And here, from Dorset, England, is another happy Word user - thanks to Jim and all who gave me the confidence to try what was suggested. I had two files named "Normal" and changed the name to 'normal.dat' and can now access Word. What I don't get is why the problem started. I have a Dell Dimension 2100. Is it a problem with Dell or Word?

I have been working on this "Word" problem for about 2 weeks now. My last try was typing the error message online to see if anything came up. I just tried what you recommended and "Word" is now working. Thank you!

Hi everybody.

Read about normal.dot and entire Word troubleshooting here:
www.theofficeexperts.com/word.htm

While one person said to "just delete it", some users may not want to do that. They may have stored macros or autotext entries, which will be lost if you delete normal.dot.

To be safe, and a cute way to remember is to rename normal.dot to abnormal.dot. Word then does NOT recognize it as its default template. When Word can't find normal.dot, it creates a new one that is free from corruption.

If you've got custom toolbars, macros, or autotext entries that you'd like to save from a corrupt normal.dot, see the instructions at the article.

The renaming of normal.dot to normal.dat fix worked for me. One question, can I delete the normal.dat; is it being used for anything now that it is renamed? Does anyone know exactly why this fix does work, really?

Donot rename the normal global template there is no need to. Delete the file and empty the recycle bin right away!!! It is corrupted anyway or there could always be a chance normal.dot was attacked by a virus. Donot be a packrat with a corrupted, non-working normal cluttering up some poor directory.

WOW! I don't know how you did this, but after hours of searching for a solution, just renaming NORMAL to NORMALDAT brought back WORD. How did you know?

I had the same problem only it wasn't a GPF. Winword just started hanging one day after being installed for three years. If we tried starting any other app after Word we would get a message like "You do not have sufficient memory to start this application. Please quit one or more applications and try again". If we started another application first and then Winword we received the following error message which led me to this site: "Winword has caused an error in User.exe. Winword will close." Either way, eventually we would have to retart the machine with a hard-boot.

Renaming the Normal.dot file solved the problem . . . . at least for now.

Jim, your advice was right on about renaming the normal.dot file. A friend directed me to this thread because I was having the same Word problem. I renamed the file normal.dat and voila! Word works again!

Thanks. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Tony

Try lowering your colour display settings to 256 colours, if that stops the problem then update your graphic card drivers ( this happens alot with ATI graphic cards )

Christine,
This worked for me.
Find all your files called NORMAL.DOT. Rename them (Normal.dat or Normal.cat or Normal.pat). Then start Word again.
Post a note if it works.
Bye.
