EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in SHDOC401. Post a Reply
From: Brad on 11/26/2002
Friend of mine is recieving this error. She installed the critical updates package from MS, and is now recieving this error upon bootup. She can get on to her ISP if she doesn't say OK to the error, however she can't surf. All she can do is Message and the like. She cannot open My Computer, etc. I would have advised her to simply reformat and reinstall as there is nothing important on the Computer, but it was a Custom PC built by a now out of buisness local Store...that didn't provide a Win98 CD for her to reinstall with when she bought it.

Help?

(In English: delete abnormal long file name extensions (more than 20 Characters) in Registry under Hkey Classes Root, these begin with a DOT e.g. .avi .zip)

My advice helped out this person with the same issue.

I know that I have dealt with this issue previously (and recently) on this board already. I just could not find it quickly to directly link you to that post.

The problem is associated with a conflict with one of your IE updates you did with MS. The dll file versions associate with the update end up conflicting with current versions that are not updated and creates the error message.

My recommendation is to uninstall IE (will automatically uninstall Outlook Express so make sure to back up your stuff). After uninstall, install IE v6.0. Make sure to avoid that update again. You can give it a try but I would just stay away from the update until Microsoft fixes it. I am still unsure of the exact update that is causing this problem. But be happy you are not the only one that has dealt with this issue.
