Ethernet won't come up on my PCI 6500/275 PPC Post a Reply
From: Fred on 11/05/2002
I have a old 6500/275 Macintosh Power Mac with PCI slots OS 7.6.1 , searched the net and tried several ethernet cards I have DIGITAL 21041 chip a intel 82557 chip SMC EN 5030 chip and went and got a used RTL 8139 chip board "realtek" makes the chip and everyone says it's the one that works for them on the net. I installed their driver as it says to and the extension is there where it should be but no show on TCP/IP control panel or appletalk and nothing comes over ethernet I am monitoring it with a packet sniffer on another computer.
One of the dec chips was a farallon board with the 21041-PB chip on it.
Why doesn't the mac OS just see the board and let me go on with my life? I am about to give up and live without ethernet.
Any mac people here?

"Mac On Linux (MOL)" is a free program that lets you run a "virtual machine" under Linux/PPC (Similar to VMWare under Linux/i586!).

Inside of this virtual machine, one can either run another Linux instance, or MacOS - starting with MacOS 7.5.2, over MacOS 8.x, 9.x up to MacOSX (10.1 and 10.2)!

Save your money and upgrade to Yellow Dog Linux, you can download the CD for free from
http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/
It reads HFS (your old mac disks) and will configure your network card and almost any network card plus you get a big bunch of free software too!
You can run OS X within YDL, or dual boot.
I found a link to a tutorial

"it is bundled with hundreds of applications and utilities that you can enjoy in performing your home and office work."

I promised I would talk to my Mac friend and she agrees. It may be a OS problem.

I would try an OS reinstall. Hopefully you have another disk drive that you can use to transfer your programs, settings, and documents to temporarily. That is one good thing about a MAC.

However, it might not hurt to try another network card. You might find a used or new one that is guarenteed to work with OS 7.6. There is a chance that the card may not be compatible with your mac.

I know this is frusterating, but hang in!

Sorry, I could not be of more help.

You may be right 7.6 system is what came with the computer and it isn't worth paying for the upgrade to 8. I would think since the computer came with PCI it should see the card. I put the card into a PC and it works fine, so it's not the card. I checked the extensions manager and "Mac TCP/IP DNR" shows up as on and in my system folder. I have restrated this thing so many times it hurts, this is a big waste of time. The PC BIOS showed the card as vendor ID 10EC and device id 8139 as the realtek driver readme says it should, so I think it is the 7.6 system version. And I switched PCI slots with the video card that is pluged in the other slot, it only has two pci slots.

The problem you are having seems to be with the OS rather than your card. Maybe a preference is not set correctly. Somehow, the OS is not initializing the TCP/IP and Appletalk in the control panel on start up. Some extension or preference in the OS files (not the ethernet card) are not set correctly.

I will talk to a friend about this and see if I can get something specific.

Is there a chance that the card is not working or you have the wrong driver? You might consider trying another ethernet card.

Did you try another PCI slot on the 'logic board' (Mac Talk)? It might be possible that their is a problem with that PCI slot.

Did you have another Ethernet card installed in the computer previously that was operational?

Sorry I cannot pinpoint exactly the problem. I am sure that you tried all my suggestions and do not mean to insult your intelligence. You are right, Macs CAN be a little weird sometimes and can lead to a process of ellimination when it comes to this type of troubleshooting. It can be sometimes so stupid that you have to do something completely unrelated to get something else working.

I have "TCPack for aol" appletalk is on - several open transport extensions "Apple Ethernet CS II" extension - these all came with the stock install of the computer no TCP/IP extension as you say. The docs for the driver and other net info says that I should see my board show up when I go to control panel TCP/IP but none there or in system profiler. I tried removing the CS extension -> reboot and the realtek extension is in there that their installer created but it is not labeled as a extension in the file list and I don't think there is a way to change that no one on the net mentioned that.
Macs are strange, I know.

Did you enable the TCP/IP or appletalk extension? Make sure that it is enabled in the System Folder (drag it out of the disabled folder and into the extensions folder).

Post back if that does not work.
