 System32\hal.dll prob Post a Reply
From: Mikey on 07/17/2002
My box crashed. I'm running XP and all of a sudden when trying to boot I get Invalid Boot ini.file
booting from c:\windows\
then the nest screen is, Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
|sustem32\hal.dll.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file

What's up? I can't get anything. I tried a dirty reinstall of XP whch brought it up for about 18hrs then crash! I have loads of files that I do not wish to loose in there. Is there a way to get XP back without reformatting? I don't want to have to have someone go in and get all of my files and have to reinstall it all again! Any suggestions/help? Thanks in advance to everyone who responds with anything. Hope all are having an excellent summer.

Nooooooooo! i need help! Okay i was at this website TRYING to keep a billion things from poping up when i started my computer. My boyfriend suggested that i check out http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
so i did and i clicked on the "full" list and started clicking away, unchecking things under the msconfig - startup menu. I must have unclicked whatever it is that makes it boot up, related to <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
I cannot find a copy of windows, though i have one around here somewhere. Is that my only option? to boot from a windows CD?? What am i to do! If i try to boot it up and hit f8, nothing happens. the only menu i can get up is the f2 menu and change to boot order (so i can boot from cd or something)

Reinstalling the operating system fixes most issues and Microsoft would obviously reccommend this (suprise), but I think most people on this forum are just trying to fix the error and get their PC up and running again without losing their data. Reinstalling over the top can cause no end of problems so I would never reccommend this to anyone.
If you aren't worried about your data you could just reformat and reinstall and that should solve your problem. Putting your hard disk in another machine and wiping it from there is also an option.

I don't suspect that this error is always something to do with resizing partitions or running a disk clean as my brother has the same problem and all he did was try to install extra memory and then on a reboot he got he missing hall.dll message.
I suspect this would most likely mean that the dll file is corrupt and as it relates to your hardware, hence the reason you can't boot.
I have suggested that he boots up with ERD Commander 2005 from CD (free software) which 90% of the time fixes any system file corruption.

None of the boot.ini fixes listed here worked for him, so I think this problem has many fixes depending on the circumstances in which it appeared.

I had the same boot ini problem. Hal.dll is corrupted or missing.

I have follwed the instructions the same way as Antero suggested. It worked. Thanks.

Please, before re-installing XP or suspecting you have a bad hard disk:
- go into BIOS while booting
- change the boot order to boot from CD
- insert your XP installation CD and boot again
- start the recovery console
- type your admin password
- type CHKDSK /P
- type BOOTCFG /REBUILD

I had this "missing or corrupt hal.dll" problem after I had tried to merge two partitions on my XP box by using Partition Magic. Since PM removed one drive during the process I ended with an incorrect BOOT.INI.

I was able to recover XP in one hour (after I had read through this forum and found the valuable instructions).

I developed this problem too after a spyware prg from Bullseye was installed (bridge.dll & Bargain.exe). These would not stay removed, even after I edited the reg, uninstalled it (it was listed in the prg's to uninstall) and uninstalled the origional prg that put it there. Regedit again and again, nothing. After the first reboot from all this is when I got the hal.dll error msg.

I did everything listed here and nothing worked. Not even when I pulled all HD's out and replaced them with an older one by itself. Strange enough, it only stopped when I cleared my BIOS out. I don't understand this, but it's now working fine with the origional HD's back in place.

Hi all - I've got this problem too, but arrived at it in a slightly different way ....

I compiled a brand new machine (this is the fourth identical one I've built), loaded windows, loaded the software ... rebooted.

Now, about every 1 in 3 boots I got a quick blue screen when loading - so quick I couldn't read it. Then a reboot, then "Windows didn't shut down pro...".

Ignore it, and it boots fine. Reboot, it boots fine. Reboot again - quick blue screen ....

So I pulled all the bits out, formatted the HD, installed all components, drives etc 1 by 1.

Got the same thing. Grrrrrrrrr.

Reinstalled windows over the top - got Hal.dll error.

I think its a hard drive issue - going to replace this PM. One thing I did notice when installing though, is I got a nasty electrical shock from the outside of my network connector cable that was connected to my cable modem while I was touching the PC case (earthed). I thought I may have just touched the connectors, but don't think so now. Can a faulty earth cause a HD to fail - or even the mobo ? I'll check the cable with a multi meter this PM too.

i have the same problem, but as you all have the luck of reinstalling, i cant even do that..

caus he doesnt find my disk, theyre aint a volume to install on or repair, i see my disks in the bios.. running to disks as one.

but just cant install a thing, also in does, i cant find my disks.

typing fdisk doesnt work to, think this will be a jaob for the hardcore expert, caus if needed, i cant reinstall to, to many important files on there tha i have to retrieve in some way..stupid guaranty on my comp, wont let me open my case for myself to.. sealed:S.. else i wold have made a secondary of my hds on this comp, so i could transfer the files, and format them here or something..

this problem sucks bigtime, hadnt heard from it eiter

-i didnt install big programs
-did not remove big rograms
-did no make or removed partitions

-only huge transfers of date (vcd's)

so why this happend i dont know, my comp did scandisk when my comp was shut down correctly, kindah strange.. but that could be cause of overnet.. that is one when running and shutting down my comp?

damn $# windows.. good luck to you all! hope i can retrieve my files before 3dfestival

Ok Im at my wits end, and about throw my computer out the window.

I have a HP Vectra 500MHz Pentium III

OS is Windows XP Pro

that out of the way, several months ago I tried to install a cd writing software for another hp computer and my system crashed in the middle of the installation. When I rebooted and after the BIOS screen I get the error message, missing or corrupted Hal.dll file, and to that I need to re-insall the missing file.

ok, well when I press any key it does an auto boot. I have the option to F2 to enter Bios and if I catch it just right I can F8 to enter the OS command screen (where you can go into safe mode), but EVERY option in there brings me right back to the missing hal.dll message and again, pressing any key does an autoboot.

ok what I have tried:
Tried changing the order of the boot so I can boot off my original XP Pro CD, and try to fix it. BUT every time it trys to boot to the CDRom it says Drive failure, instert system disk, press any key to continue. I know the cd is a bootable cd, I used it recently on another machine I have, just to check to see its bootable.

o.O

ok so at this point, I created a DOS 6.0 diskett and copied the hall.dll file to it as well. Using the disk it boots into DOS. NOW I CANT FIND MY HARD DRIVE. A:\ and B:\ are the floppy drive, R:\ and S:\ (used to be D:\ and E:\) are my cdroms, and I tried every other letter in the alpha 3x's and no others work. It's like the the drive and only one I ever had (C:\) is gone. I cant replace the file if I have no destination to send it.

I was able to use a backdoor in DOS to access the XP CD and by the following: S:\i386\winnt
This began the setup for XP, but it halted right way, saying there was an interal set up error, somethign about couldnt find where to swap to.

So I thought it was the hard drive goign bad, went out and bought a new one (80 gigs this time vrs the 13 gigs I had) I installed the HDD, making sure that I had the jumper set to Master, since its the only drive on the IDE cord. I double checked the CDRoms to make sure master and slave jumpers were correct. I turned my machine on, and nothing, just hangs on blue screen I can press F2 to enter BIOS. So I went in and under the HDD settings, I changed it to read the HDD as 1023 heads cylinders 16 (or whatever the settings are, Im at work and trying to rely on my memory). I save and exit, and reboot.

And nothing again. So if figured at this point the BIOS needs to be upgraded and I'm to chicken to do that, so I took the new HDD out and put it in my better comp and put the old HDD back in. So basically Im back where I started.

Any suggestions, hints, tips or really good drugs?

~Ann

Thanks for all your posts, here's what happened to me...Bottom line: on a custom built machine, inplace reinstall worked best for me. I have an ASUS A7v8x deluxe 2.0 MOBO(NFORCE2 drivers) and an ATI 9500Pro AGP card, and no name memory. The hal.dll error came after I had removed "boot to win2000" entry from boot.ini and I was installing/enabling the voice commands feature. For what its worth, that's where I was. My system hung on the Win XP pro logo start screen overnight after virus check and defrag routines. In the morning, I see that the blue progess blocks weren't moving after 15 min.(probably longer)

A post from "Barry" on this site clued me in to rebuilding the boot.ini and replacing the hal.dll file. No luck. I even did the F7 option on winXP Pro setup to pick the right type of CPU option. Nada(no luck). Followed a link to Microsoft.com Knowledge base article on In place upgrades. Its reinstalling XP on itself. Bingo! First try! The key for me was that I didn't have to worry about my rig being a preinstalled WinXP Pro OS from a manufacturer. I am still reinstalling just a few drivers that didn't keep but email, documents, software, instant messengers, are in place just like
before. The process is lengthy and not as clean as a fresh install.
If you can't get past the startup screen and safe mode doesn't work, and you just have to get back to where you were (or really close to it) consider the in place upgrade for windows xp Pro...http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341

Just some random thoughts for you, try another HD, a good small drive 20, 40 gigs or even 10 and one big partition.
The thought is there are some bad sectors on the HD you are using, and/or if you partition it into a million drives somehow its trying to get that file off another partition? (DOS sucks and windows is just a front for DOS) or BIOS is just screwed. Don't use one of those programs that lets you access large drives (for now as a test).
Another thought is to use something like disk magic or for FREE - just download and use the first CD of Red Hat or Mandrake Linux to partition the disk so that windows won't use the first 5 megs for anything, thus skipping over the bad portion of the disk.
A disk test program may not find a error that occurs because of heat or some other condition, since you only run it for a little while.
The idea here is to try strange things, you may just run into the solution.
One more thought is to install your HD on another guys computer, format it, install everything and see if it still has a problem on his machine then transfer to yours. That can rule out the HD as a problem.
Power supplies are cheap, or borrow one and temp plug it in to your system as a test.
Try things that rule out motherboard, power supply, HD etc, and remove things you don't need, including extra RAM. And swap RAM, or try RAM from someone else's computer.
Final thoughts, reset BIOS CMOS. Any chance the windows CD is somehow screwed up? Why not borrow one from someone else if you can. (last resort)

I've skimmed this whole topic and i still can't fix my friend's computer!

My friend decided to reformat...so use windows cd to reformat...then the damn missing or corrupt hal.dll pops up...therefore i:

-reinstalled windows
-used different windows cd
-slow formatted the drive
-chkdsk /p
-bootcfg /rebuild
-copy d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
-then the last three in reverse order at once

NOTHING WORKS!!!!!!

Hi, hope this might help you, my situation is not that critical after all, at the begining I discovered a way to counter this error that is to put my XP cd in the cd-rom and it starts! The problem is when I remove the cd the error appears again!

So if anyone who are at the similar problem like mine I found out the problem, well actually after I read all the other comments and solutions too!

This problem occurs most probably you all have a multiple partitions or hard disk, and when I go to the CMOS setup after pressing Del button at the begining, I gone through every single commands and options, then I realize that the problem is at the boot sectors. In my case, I have a few options which is boot from either Floppy, CD_Rom, HDD-0, HDD-1, HDD-2 and so on, here is the key point, for ppl who can input first, second or 3rd boot device, do not have 2 similar HDD, and just have the primary boot will do.

In my case, the default setting is CD-ROM, HDD-0, and HDD-1, but after I change it to Floppy, CD-ROM and HDD-0. The problem solve.

I don't need to format it either, thank God! my files are save !!! Now I hav to get a large HDD just in case..... ( Damed XP !! =P)

Well I've had this problem for the past week and I think (based on my many late nights surfing the net)this error occurs for a few different reasons. Boot.ini problems, dead or dying hard drive or partition issues. I am having trouble installing XP onto a newly formatted hard drive so I can't edit my boot file. Numerous tests confirm the hard drive is OK so now I am going for option 3. I have had this drive in an old system with a 32 gig hard drive limit. I've trashed a system in the past flashing the bios so I don't do that anymore. I had used disc wizard from Seagate to fool the bios into think this was a smaller drive on boot up and it loads ontrack first and I then I get my 40 gig hard drive. Problems is this creates some invisible partitions that programs (windows, partition magic 8) can't see so now they all think it's a 32 gig hard drive. I'm guessing that's why I'm having this error cause windows is looking for the invisible partition. Anyway I'm off home to try the trusty old FDISK. This site has heaps of trusty old FDISK info http://radified.com/FDISK/fdisk.htm

To completely erase teh hdd of any virus, and all partitions, u can run a debug script on hdd. This wipes out allinfo then u can reinstall windows.
Also try to copy HAL.DL_ from cd rom to c:/winnt/system32/hal.dll
This should also resolve the issue

use the bootcfg command, boot your XP disk and press R to get the recovery console then you can run the command.

bootcfg /rebuild

this scans for windows installations and lets you add them or whatever. it makes a new boot ini file for you

'Ended up here tonite because I, too, was just slapped with the dreaded "...missing or corrupt...\system32\hal.dll..." message. 'Have enjoyed reading this thread, and may be able to shed a little light, thanks to insights gleaned from many of you, above.

Rules of thumb:

1. If you haven't been messing with your system, such as deleting or rearranging partitions, etc., or running cleanup programs that delete "duplicate" dlls, etc., and you get the missing or corrupt hal.dll message, then you may well have a hard drive problem, like several of you pointed out. If so, good luck.

2. If, however, you've been "improving" your system by doing some heavy earth moving, like I (and probably most of you) do on a more or less regular basis, then those who suggested that it may well be something as simple to fix as merely editing boot.ini to point Windows to the correct partition are the most likely to be correct.

It was so in my case: 'deleted a useless proprietary partition created by one of the major mass-producers of PCs and broke the 'puter because the surviving partion was now then number 1 (as in only) partition yet the boot.ini file hadn't been advised of all the heavy earth moving and was still pointing proudly to partition 2 as the location of WinXP.

So...in my case a very easy fix, but only because of the fine inputs above. Kudos all.

editing the boot.ini file to reference the correct partition worked for my prob. (as in my last post)so if some of you have farted around with your partitions, windows may give you the hal.dll issue if its looking for the wrong partition(x)
There is a backup boot.ini (called boot.ini.backup in c:\windows\pss) so renaming this in place of c:\boot.ini might work if its lost/gone...otherwise edit it to reference the right partitions.

For those running NTFS....i suggest NTFSDOS Pro to edit from DOS.

And for email....use Eudora. It runs from its orig. install directory even after OS reinstall (98 or XP) and folder moving. Also keeps your attachments as individual files not in a massive inbox.dbx file and has less virus risk. ps. just a suggestion, not trying to sell it to ya :)

This may shed some light.
I used Drive Image 2002 to "cleverly" copy the XP partition to another hardisk primary active partition so that i could remove the original hardisk. My DriveImaged XP partition on the new disk did not load though.

What i forgot was that the original hardisk had a hidden primary partition so my original active XP partition was on partition 2 (partition 1 was hidden). When someone mentioned it could be an issue with the boot.ini file, i think in my case they were right.
My new hard disk had only one primary bootable partition even thought the boot.ini file from my original drive imaged XP partition was referencing to load XP from partition 2.

So, i'm guessing, editing the boot.ini for my new DI'ed partition so it references partition(1) like it should and not partition(2), should fix MY prob.

Hope this gives someone answers. I fear it may go deeper for some.
I haven't tried this fix yet (have to reboot:) but i'm pretty sure its the prob/soln.
Thnx

I seem to have encountered this Hal.dll problem as well after trying to utilize my GeForce 4's TV-OUT. When I initially tried to boot my computer in WinXP, a black screen appeared on my TV. So I then rebooted with my monitor, reduced the screen resolution from 1024x768, 32mb to 800x600, 16mb and restarted again. I then got the infamous "missing or corrupted Hal.dll" message. I have two HD's; one with WinME and one with WinXP and so I rebooted into WinME to find that the HD with XP has practically nothing on it, except for two folders ("RECYCLED" and "_RESTORE"). I want to get XP working again or at least get my files that were on there back (I feel the latter is a lost cause, as I just checked a few seconds ago and the used HD space dropped from 114GB to 884KB). Any suggestions or explanations would be greatly appreciated.

Hello every one

I have been dealing with this isu for some time now and i found the best way to deal with this problem is:

1: you boot up your pc with your original or a simalar version of OS

2: you start the innstalation prosses and when asked you tell that insted of innstalling the os you want to fix a problem in it (mostly it is the letter e you have to press down)

3: then you have to chose the os that you want to fix

4: you have to get your administrator password on the computer

5: then you run the following command: expand [CDROM DRIVE LETTER]:\I386\hal.dl_ C:\windows\system32\hal.dll

6: then you run the following command: BOOTCFG /REBUILD (remember to give your new found boot system a sutibal name and the second chose you just hit enter)

7: reboot your pc and chose the sutibal name when askd for wich os to start

hope this helps anybody

I have been running XP - both Pro and Home versions - together with ME since the beta versions of XP. All my partitions are Fat32 (because that way both OSs "see" one another and XP can run most programs installed under ME without having to also install them under XP). I have had the "missing or corrupted hal.dll" problem at least half a dozen times and agree with those who say Windows will not let you reinstall from a floppy etc. I use Drive Image to back up my systems (a la Fred Langa) and when I get this dumb message - which is a Microsoft error/weakness and nothing to do with your particular machine - I find the quickest way to solve it is to invoke Drive Image and reinstall the latest backup of XP. Takes only 5 minutes.

I strongly suspect that the problem is with the boot.ini file getting "lost" (by Windows!) while switching from one OS to another so now - ready for the next time - I have a floppy copy of the "good" boot.ini which (hopefully) I can reinstall in ME and reboot in less than 5 minutes.

this problem happened twice to me and no matter what I did there was no way working around the problem. I tried to copy the file from the CD and got error "denied". I tried to "expand d:\I386\hal.dll_C:\windows\system32\hal.dll" to no avail.
I tried to run BOOTCFG /REBUILD, added the OS, but still the same error. I spend 4hrs on the net looking for different alternatives, but whatever I tried, there was no change. Everyone out there who is saying do this and try that; did this problem actually happen to you or do you assume it can be fixed by doing what you think? hmmm would like to know that. Here is a simple solution to our missing hal.dll community out there.
RE-INSTALL XP!!!!!!!! You wont lose any data whatsoever. The only thing that might not work is some programs. Just re-install the ones that don't work.
When XP start up; finally again, your desktop will be blank, (except for the recycle bin) but that does not mean that everything was wiped.
Go to the drive where you installed windows - program files - double click the user account you used before or default user. You'll find it there
Last bit of advice: get yourself a reasonably sized HDD and partition it using Ranish Partition Manager 2.42 or later (it's free ). You need at least 5GB (if you have a big drive this could be more I use 10GB) to install XP, Oficce and your other programs. Store all your files on the other partition. If anything happens to XP again and you can't boot up, you can format that drive (if you want to) and all your info will be safe on the other drive.
THIS IS GAURENTEED.
Please reply if this help you at wall.

I got this same hal.dll file missing or corrupt message on boot, when I loaded an OEM version of XP home onto a empty Hard Drive. I tried replacing it with the XP C/D hal.dll file twice, a downloaded copy of hal.dll and a copy of a working friends computer hal.dll file to no avail. Still get same error message! I beginning to think that the hal.dll file is unique to the Computer manufacturer, Dell, Gateway, HP or Compact. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Follow the link below for a strange tale of corruption and kidnapping...

Missing or Corrupt HAL.DLL error messages are MISLEADING many into actions that may not be at all neccessary.

http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/forums/forum.asp?foru=32

Here's an excerpt:
"If I now go into my BIOS and set my Legacy USB support to "ENABLE", I get - you've guessed it - no sign of the BIOS level option to run the Raid setup routines ...and... <Missing or Corrupt HAL.DLL> with a refusal to boot into XP Pro.

AARGHHHHHHHHHHH

Remember, I HAD this set "ON" when I was happily running XP Pro on the Raid pair with the 120Gb 2nd HDD and the TnT M64 card in place. It is only since the 4600 was introduced to the system that this HAL problem became an issue.

If there is anyone who can shed light on this oddity, please please enlighten me.

I HATE being confused ""

I received the HAL.DLL is corrupt or missing after a weekly clean of the hard drive (i.e. emty recycle bin, Scandisk, View report and run Scandisk again). I have NAV 2003 system works, so Ghost is running.

I tried to replace the HAL file, but it would not take. I have tried to access the system32 folder, but windows will not allow. The PC will NOT get past the DOC error screen. When I tried to boot and extrct the file from the CD, I received no file found. I downloaded a clean(?) copy of HAL.DLL, but still nothing. I am going to try the BOOT.INI fix below in this string tonight. Any other suggestions?

Hey, I stumbled upon this thread while searching for a fix for a similar problem of mine I encountered last night. I'm at work now, so I haven't been able to try the solution I found, but I found a link to Microsoft's site where it suggested that this error may actually be caused from a problem in the boot.ini file, and that getting the recovery console going and running BOOTCFG /REBUILD may fix it. I'm planning on trying when I get home. One thing I haven't found posted anywhere is what people did that caused this problem in the first place. I got this problem when I was using the disk manager tool to convert my hard drive partitions from 'simple' to 'dynamic' to (hopefully) allow dynamic resizing of my partitions. I was doing this all to try and help a friend figure out how to resize her primary partition. Well, it rebooted fine the first time, but claimed to have found new hardware and needed to reboot. When I allowed it to do so, it got that error about hal.dll being lost of currupt. I checked and made sure that the file is in place and looks good, but it seems that when I was messing with the disk management, it may have changed some of the partition info, so that the boot.ini is no longer pointing to the correct place for some reason. I hope that something I've babbled about here can be of some use to someone.

I just tried to install XP. I deleted all partitions and used the NTFS (quick) in the XP Setup to create one. I got the same message when I rebooted, so I re-installed on the same partition. I got the error agian. I then deleted that partition and and used the NTFS (slow) to create a partition. I still got the error. How do I reinstall the file? I can boot using a ME boot disc, but it won't let me copy the file from the CDROM to the HD. What can I do?

Error:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file

open the pod bay doors hal..dll
"I'm sorry I cannot do that michael"

you can get this error even if you have an intact NON corrupted Hal.dll and your drive scans perfect.

ok.. truth of the sitiation..
you should NOT have to reinstall windows.
and most of the time this error is NOT due to a failing hard drive.
as posted below.. and has NOTHING to do with windows 9x os's

generally you will recieve this error if you have changed a partition size moved a partion, or cloned a partition with windows NT or 2K or XP installed on it..

the best solution would be to change the drives SID's
there are several utilities out there that can do this..
the best I know if being "system commander" version 7 or higher..

change the drive/partitions sid and then edit the boot ini
to point the correct partition for given operating system.

this should cure your problem..

HAL problems are usually associated with a bad hard drive. Please keep in mind that all computers that you purchase with an installed operating system should come with an install CD or restore CD. If not, make sure to talk to your computer manufacturer. There is a very good chance you need this to fix this problem.

If you are not familiar with computers, I would take this one to a professional. Make sure that the hard drive is ok. Again, this problem is usually associated with a bad hard drive.

In addition, it is possible that a virus caused this issue. Make sure you have the most current version a an antiviral software.

If you are familiar with computers and have an install disk. Make sure your HDD is operating normally. Keep in mind, a Win95/98/ME startup disk will NOT recognize an NTFS formatted hard drive. Some Windows XP Home users use this format and this would give a false positive to a failed hard drive. If you rule out Hard Drive failure, I would try to repair the MBR. You can do this in the Recover Console by using your startup disk on boot. Type 'Help' and you will find the appropriate commands. If this does not work, do an 'over-install'. Reinstall the operating system over itself. I believe that Windows XP is probably the best for this type of operation, but it is still risky. It is possible that you will regain control of your computer but you could have registry issues.

Good luck troubleshooting. Feel free to post back.

What do you do if you can't type in the instructions. I am getting the hal.dll missing or corrupt error message but when I type anything if trys to restart - but can't because hal is missing.

Putting the XP cd in does n't work.

I don't know how to reformat even when I can't start windows....

Make sure you have the correct HAL.

This is not an unusual error. Microsoft recommends that you reinstall the operating system, and also indicates that this occurs after a 'dirty' install of XP over ME or 98. I never like to install an operating system with files on a disk that I could loose. That is a rule of thumb for installs. I recommend that a user backs up to another hard drive, CD, or Tape (now a days, even DVD).

I don't agree with Microsoft, and would prefer to simply extract the file from the install CD and put it back in the Windows/System32 directory.

FYI - Here is Microsoft's KBA on the subject:

http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q320252

Here is what I recommend:

Get to the Command Prompt through a startup disk or the Advanced Startup Options.

With the Windows XP CD in your favorite CDROM drive, type:

extract [CDROM DRIVE LETTER]:\I386\cabs\hal.dll /L [HARD DRIVE LETTER]:\Windows\System32\

Restart Computer

Post back if you still have problems. My commands are weak this morning so I might have missed-typed.
