windows 95B, generic mini-tower PC. IE 5.

My hard drive is partitioned into C-drive, and D-drive.
I recently re-formatted my C-drive, but not my D-drive.

The C is fine, but when I try to download to D-drive, I get message saying, "this drive is Write Protected".

Please help.

Hello,

There are many reasons for this problem:

1. You have installed Windows 98 on a Toshiba Libretto
50CT, 70CT or 100CT computer.
2. Your computer has a standard port replicator.
3. You have a serial mouse attached to the standard
port replicator.
4. The Windows 98 serial port driver (Serial.vxd)
conflicts with Toshiba's power management driver
(Pwrsave.vxd).

To solve this problem, please try the following procedures.

1. To resolve this issue, obtain the latest power
management drivers for your computer from Toshiba's
Web site. These drivers are available as
L50pwsave.exe, L70pwsave.exe, and L100pwsave.exe.

2. This problem may occur because of enabling fast
shutdown option.

To resolve this please follow the below
mentioned steps.

1. Click Start -> Run -> Type " msconfig ".
2. Select " General Tab " in " System
Configuration Utility " Window.
3. Click on " Advanced " button.
4. Check " Disable Fast Shutdown " check box.
5. Click OK.
6. Restart the computer.

If this doesn't work out, try the following procedure.

1. Restart your computer, press and hold the CTRL key
until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu, and then
choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only.
2. Use any text editor (such as Edit.com) to open the
System.ini file in the Windows folder.
3. Locate the "device=pwrsave.vxd" line in the
[386enh] section of the System.ini file, and then
disable it by placing a semicolon (;) at the
beginning of the line.
4. Save and then close the System.ini file.
5. Restart your computer.

Regards,
Sherlock.

It sounds like you have a hard drive that is over 1 GB, and on 95 you need special drivers to allow larger hard drives.

When you formated C drive, you erased the driver that you had put on there from the drive's install disk.

If you can find your drive's install disk (yea right!) then you might be able to use it's installer program to get your D drive back in order. Check on the manufacturer's web site and maybe they allow you to download the program.

If you used a special program to format the C drive, then maybe check it to see if you might have locked the the D drive by accident.

There's no feature in windows (except for networking drives) that locks a drive read only, except for removable drives (did it maybe configure the drive as a removable?).

Did you try Norton or Nuts & Bolts to see if that gives you any info?

You can make folders read only, any chance that the folder you are writing to is read only? Right click on it and select properties to see if it is.
